You're looking for a fried fish saloon, next door but one to a junction. I didn't find the Yorkshire Fish Saloon, which seems to be what it's called.

The 1936 route was Bird Street, Hospital, Stoney Stanton Road, Eagle Street so it would be on that stretch.

Yes thanks Anne/Helen. Though strangely I couldn't see that Fish Saloon either even though I have a copy of Bern's 1937 directory.

Not everything in the above photograph has gone. The clock is still around and can be found on a wall inside the Coventry Watch Museum: In October 1976 I did photograph the buildings on the left of the chemist in Swanswell Street.

Brilliant Manor-House! I did wonder about that clock but thought it would've gone for good. Thumbs up

That was my family home from 1960 my father Harold Sykes the builder that ran Jobbing Building and Painting and Decorating firm, it is still in my family my brother and his partner still live there. When I moved in there was a terrace of three story top shops, l remember going up to the top floors where the looms had been was perfect square where they had been and all around the outside repairs to floor were the constant traffic from the weavers. I always thought that the building on the left was the engine room that drove the main shaft that the full length of the Top Shops belt fed, and 624 was something to do with the management of the process.

Hello, I won't go into detail, but Harold Sykes was a fabulous & good builder. The hook-over metal railings were I believe, almost his invention. They are everywhere now. There's hardly a stretch of railway line anywhere in the UK, not protected by them. Loved reading your post. Thank you. Welcome to our forum. Pull up a chair & have a tot of port. Arr, that's better.

The three storey top shops mentioned by Mr Sykes were demolished in the mid 1970's. Most of the properties were empty but demolition was brought forward when the end gable section nearest to Cross Rd decided to collapse one morning and to shower Stoney Stanton Road with bricks and slates. I recall that Stoney Stanton Rd had to be closed for an hour or so so that the building could be made safe. A chap that I knew had come from Leamington to buy bricks at the builders merchant just up the road in Bell Green Rd so he had rather a long wait.

I've kept this C.E.T. cutting because there is a Coventry Transport bus stop, seen on the left, next to the chap with a white top, and I had used it a few days before this event happened. Dated 30th April 1975 and the demolition was the day before, so we are just 4 days short of it being 50 years ago;

I feel sure that photo no.6 is from the top of Priestley canal bridge looking down St. Stanton Rd. towards the city.
