Grove Street

I was born in Grove Street in 1965. It was knocked down not long after. My family lived next door to my aunt & uncle. Does anybody remember the Farrens or the Lapworths? Uncle Bill Lapworth owned a vegetable stall in Cov. market.

Hi yeah my name is Paul Farren, we lived at no.28 Grove Street and then moved to Harper Road. I had an uncle Bill and Albert, my cuz Steven Lapworth helped out on the stall in the market.

I lived at 28, blue door, the Corona factory backed onto George Nicholls builders yard which went though an alleway which came out onto Gosford Street, to the left side of the alleyway was a toyshop.

What a great photo, I have been looking for one of the street for years. I lived at 28 which was the one next to the black doored next to the alley, a Mrs Jones lived in that one. I used to spend the afternoon with her until one day my dad said I couldn't go in, which I didn't understand, but later in life I found out she had died in bed in the living room. Also, where all the cars are parked (on the bomb bit) the retaining wall came down on top of the ones parked there one weekend, funny thing is the chap next to me now was working at the Corona that day and it was his mate's car that also got crushed under the rubble.

Does anyone have a picture of the Shamrock Club please?

The only club I remember was the Cox St Club. Does this mean the premises became the Shamrock Club? I walked past Grove Street last Saturday on my way to our splendid meet up, and there is no sign of a street being there at all, just large buildings grass and trees. My how things have changed.

The only pictures I have ever seen of it have been aerial views of Cox Street.

It was further up the street than the Cox Street Club, sandwiched between the garage and the caravan sales park. It had previously been a pub called the Old Star.

My memories of Grove St, at the end was The Phoenix foundry, specialised in brass casting, later to become site of Corona Pop, on the lhs was Parbury the printers, used to watch them putting the lines on writing paper with strands of string. Also there was a cheese importer / distributor, name escapes me.

There are images of the Old Star but they are bits of it, rather than a full on. The only image of it fully I know of is a Bunney painting. There's a half picture on the left side of a misty image of Cox Street. And a bit of it on c03684 in the library pictures. Once you recognise the building next door but one, it's easier to identify in other photos.

Bit off kilter I know. That car in the picture. Is that a Wolseley 4 44? I once owned a Riley Pathfinder that was a very similar car.
