Anyone who uses Google Maps and their Streetview feature - they have started to add some 3D buildings into the Coventry map

Google actually leave the 3D modelling mainly to users themselves outside of the main US cities. They have developed a building maker tool so users can create and add the models themselves. That's why a lot of the current 3D imagery you can see for places like Coventry are Uni/Student buildings!
Very clever stuff - try going to somewhere like New York as long as you have a powerful laptop that is! Almost the entire Manhattan island is 3D mapped!
BTW 3D imagery works better within Google Earth as opposed to within Streetview/maps.
Might have a go myself sometime at adding a building or two in Cov. Wouldn't it be fantastic if someone/somewhere was able to 3D map on old Coventry city centre we could 'view through' |

Good morning everyone,
So that I do not get totally left behind with all this modern technology I have been making use of the 3D effects on Google. and it is amazing what it comes up with all over the world so it will be great to see dear old Coventry in there with the rest of them. Mind you I am still struggling with some 'things' on this 'ere beast but I know I will click on the right keys eventually!

Not working for me in at all in my Google Earth, NeilsYard?

Even better if we could go back in time on Google Earth and see Coventry as it was, say, fifty years ago!

Dutchman - make sure you have '3D Buildings' selection box ticked in the Layers box in the bottom left of Google Earth.
Use the right hand side slider to zoom in and click on the top 'compass' to get a more eye level view of the 3D imagery.

I use the SketchUp thing as a bit of a toy, doing mock-ups of my ideas etc rather than for recreating existing structures (mainly because I'm an awful artist.)
I have done a few of the city centre buildings, like the cathedrals and HT as part of bigger plans, but as I've got an old computer I don't bother with the texturing as it takes up too much memory, just using the bog standard ones available on SketchUp. |

Okay, this is strange. The first time I tried it it crashed my PC!
The second time it sort of worked but was very blurry.
The third time it was much clearer and extra buildings had been added!

Just adding here that Google Maps has recently been updated with new features and now has fairly recent maps including the updated Broadgate.
I'm just looking for a way to overlay Old Maps with the current layout like Rob's done. |

Just to update this - seems some of our visiting students have been adding to GoogleEarth 3D
One for all us CCFC fans to remember when we had a home
The historical photo feature is quite useful in that although there's not that many aerial images pre 2001 (OK there's one!)
If you leave the 3D building setting ticked on your preferences it will continue to overlay any modern day 3D buildings that have been added over the old map photos meaning you can see exactly where the old layout stood |
