Fog

I miss the old 'pea-soupers', it was great for playing hide and seek Mind you my lungs have paid the price for it since, the slightest whiff of smoke now sets me off

I used to look forward to the fog, my mum would give me a 'tot' of Stone's Ginger Wine and wrap my scarf real tight and push me out the door to 'feel' my way to school. Wasn't there such a silence though, sort of liked it.

I lived at 31 Holyhead Rd in the last house to be demolished in the remaining row of watchmakers' houses, the fogs could be so dense at times that we would go outside with torches to help the traffic on this main road, this was in the 1950's, and yes peasouper is a good description of the conditions!

Hi Sally The times that I must have swung on your tubular railings outside of your home. Those railings were distinctive.

Round about 1957, we had a smog to contend with on a return journey at night to Coundon. I had to get out of the car on Scots Lane with a torch and lead my dad, who was driving, around the island by the Cedars pub and down half of Cedars Avenue to our house. For those who have never experienced smog, it was so thick that if you extended your arm in front of you, you had difficulty in seeing your hand. My mum, who suffered from asthma, had terrible problems in such severe conditions.

You and many others including myself Philip enjoyed those railings (lol) the night we used the torches to help the traffic a car had actually driven into the railings, as another member has stated it was smog and you could barely see your hand in front of you, smog had a yellowish tinge to it, I know we kept the kettle on for tea, the police were very thirsty that night!

One very foggy night as I was making my way to work the nightshift at Morris Engines - I always went in the Courthouse Green entrance which was right on the bend - and all the traffic behind me followed me into the factory. The gateman told me at knocking off time that he had a right job getting them all turned around and back out again.
