A favourite of mine as it's the only image with the old building in the middle of the view. It's the first building on the 1850 map travelling from the west. The only building on that side of the road I'm missing is the one set back, behind the Black Horse. I believe that Dutchman was looking for that one too. |

In 1970, there was a flood in Spon End, possibly the River Sherbourne overflowing. This image shows the consequence. Does any Forum user remember this?

Lovely view through the Arches in the days when Spon End ---> Spon Street really was the main thoroughfare in to town from the west -

I don't think we've had this one before - Thanks to my mate Tony McSweeney who kept many an old newspaper clipping over the years -
An unusual shot of Chapel Lane between the Windmill Inn and Spon Gate school off Spon Causeway, Spon Street on January 14th 1941.

Given the curve, I'm guessing that it's adjacent to the chapel. |

That map suggests that the block was still made up of back to back houses. Something that they were trying to do away with, quite a while before the war. After the war they were probably desperate for housing. |

From the Cooper Collection - when it was still residential (though getting in a state!) Note Spon Street going off to the right -

Amazing how the web puts people together. I sent a link to my post #225 image from CD looking across towards Thomas/Moat/York Street and a gentlemen called Richard Prestidge was delighted to see it as he lived at No.2 York Street - he also confirmed the scrap yard visible on York Street east-side was at that time Kilbane's which has been mentioned on several other threads. |
