In the 1851 census a relative of mine Eliza Shirley is listed in London Road as a teacher. Does anyone recognise the name or know how I can find out more details of the school where she may have taught? |

I believe she is on the 1841 census with a Melicent Shirley - Melicent's occupation is something like "scholastica" - the image isn't very clear. They are living at Whitley House with a number of individuals between the ages of 7 and 15.
On the 1861 census Eliza's occupation is schoolmistress, and her address is "Boarding School, Whitley Common". Her neighbors on one side live at "xxxxx (indistinct) Mill House, Whitley Common" and on the other at "London Road, Whitley Villa".
On the 1871 census - bingo! Liggins Mill School is her address, still Whitley Common.
By 1881 I think she is back in Middlesex.
Perhaps you can find the school in a directory now that its name is known.
Hope this helps! |

Thank you so much, I can now research the school. The mill, I believe, was owned by a Joseph Liggins. |

I've had no luck in identifying Liggins Mill School, Whitley. Does anyone know if there is a directory of old Coventry Schools? |
