I believe that a young lady, residing in Sewall Highway, not far from the Devon, was murdered sometime in the 60's. Anybody out there have any knowledge of this matter?

The young girl in question was murdered at a much earlier date than quoted, it was around 1950. I knew her very well and I was a friend of her brothers. She was actually killed on land behind the houses which was at the time used as allotments. The killer was caught and jailed and as I recall was released after several years and shortly after tried to kill again. I would prefer not to give the names of those involved as some of her relatives would still be around. Alan.

I believe that we are talking about different events. I take on board what you said about the families etc. The event that I have in mind, was in the 60's or early 70's.

I owned the cafe opposite the Devon all through the sixties until I left in 1970, and I can assure you there was no murder in that area other than the one I spoke about. I have spoken to a friend who has lived in that area all his life and he confirms what I have said. He did add that in the seventies a girls body was found in the brook at Wood End but there was never any follow up on that story. Alan

I do recall a terrible crime that happened in the area of Sewall Highway, as I used to hear people talk about it. I was pre-school age at the time, so 1950 would fit in with the event.

The girl was murdered in the alleyway behind the garden of no. 96 Sewall Highway between the Devon & the Pippin. We purchased this house in 1986 & it was one of the first things we were told by our elderly neighbours. Apparently she had been "leading" a man on & he beat her to death with a brick or paving slab - charming!!!

I remember the woman that was found in the river at Wood End, her husband was accused of her murder and tried, he was found not guilty. The police said they had closed the case and were not looking for anyone else in connection with the crime.

Mods note: Further evidence has since come to light that the husband was taken in for questioning but was eliminated from the police enquiries. He never actually went to court, he was innocent. The night in question he was at home looking after 2 boys. They never did find her killer.

A member has been in touch with more accurate information regarding the date of this murder - it happened during the first week of July 1948. Out of respect, however, this topic will remain closed to further public discussion, I hope you will all understand.
