I know it is not an old building as buildings go, but the amount of work that went into building it was vast. I am trying to find out about the three figures that stand tall above the main doorway. Can any one tell me who they were? Don't tell me it's the three wise men. Working for our council - ha ha ha. Here are a few more bits of art. All photo's taken on St Mary Street. Thumbs up
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

I did see a picture somewhere with regards to a raised walk way from the rear of the Council House to St. Mary's. It must have been 40 feet in the air. And something to do with a wall that MAY have been part of the Castle. I don't have this photo but do recall it being in a newspaper that I gave back to a lady that lent it to me. Wave
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

Coventry was part of the diocese of Lichfield until 1918.

I knew this was in my file but had trouble locating it. Quality is not great as it is from the Coventry Graphic in December 1915. It shows the building of the Council House on the Hay Lane corner. Hopefully you can read the text underneath the image.

The Coventry Graphic were fiercely critical of the new Council House...
'the exterior of the Council House is being overloaded with gaudy ornament'

Hi Mattb, and welcome to the forum. Though the figure is not very clear, this picture may interest you from the Coventry Herald 1915 when the building was nearly finished and the scaffolding removed. I don't think I have seen a close up of the figure or what it is but no doubt one of our forum members can come up with something. Maybe one of our photographer members could take a zoom lens to get a better picture.

I thought it a perfectly clear day to get a good or clearer photograph of the statuette.

Thanks for that Heathite. He looks in pretty good condition for 100 years old and he went through the bombing as well. I wonder if anyone gets up there to maintain him. I think he looks slightly more laid back than the 100 year old picture,

Wonderful photographs. Now I thought it was much much older, and designed for those days, as a kid it seemed to me the sun could not penetrate the lower half of the building, because of the buildings that hemmed it in, so they put the main statutes either in the doorway or up high, as I recall it seemed a damp shadowed narrow street, With thick stone walls and tiny windows it added dimension and mystery to someone of my tender years. It also led to the cathedral lanes (and topic)
