Recognized the name Cyril Cooper, he was my Great Uncle, here's a photo - might jog a few memories
Not the Cyril Cooper who rode for the Bees, judging by the phot..............?

Searching Google maps for Philip on the Exhall topic, I noticed that there are a couple of fishing lakes close to Hawkesbury Lane, lakes I did not even know existed. It got me wondering if there are any fishermen / women on the forum? I have been this afternoon for 5 hours and had a great time.

One of the best shops in its day was Billy Lane's Tackle in Much Park Street. On my introduction to fishing in 1962, I spent a lot of time there. Post copied from topic Shops of yore on 15th Sep 2021 2:01 pm

I never went fishing, but I remember a fishing tackle shop on the Radford Road, opposite the Radford pub. It was in a row of Victorian buildings which were demolished. The site became a petrol station, now a carwash.

As a 12 year old, I joined the junior section of Canley WMC's angling club. There was a full coach on most Sunday mornings that left the club and I was picked up at the bus stop on Charter Ave near our house. The bottles of "Nut Brown" were already being drunk by the time I was picked up. Nearly all fishing was on CDAA canal waters and near a pub. The adults normally had a 3 hour match with monetary rewards for the heaviest weight. There was probably 5 or 6 juniors, some fished the match and other fished outside of the match pegs. Come lunchtime, there was a mass exodus to the pub, with offers of 2/- to "look after my tackle", by 15 I was joining them in the pub! As a junior there were 4 or 5 of the adults whom took you under their wing and gave you good advice, I remember Bob Blake, Cyril & Anne Spiers, Harold Overton and his son Bryan among others. Stayed with Canley until I went off to play Sunday football for the Dolphin at 17. I would think that every WMC had a fishing section, so there must have been hundreds out on a Sunday morning? Still fishing to this day some 60 years later, nothing more peaceful than sitting on the bank with a batch and flask of tomato soup, no papers, radio or other distractions. Catching a 10lb Carp is a bonus.

Hi all, I've so enjoyed reading the posts on this topic. More so because I don't know the first thing about it. The nearest I ever got to the topic of "angling" was visiting my local shoe repair shop "cobblers". That was a shop, opposite the Devon pub in Sewall Highway, that was full of angling stuff. Any comments about that trader?
