I heard a story once that related to the very large Zulu at the old Coventry Zoo. Does anyone recall what ever happened to it. I can't remember if it was broken up or sold to a seaside resort. The Coventry Zoo closed around the mid 70's I believe, does anyone have any pics?
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

Just found a posting about "The rise and fall of Coventry Zoo" on the internet. It would seem they had more than their fair share of problems over the time it was open. Very funny to read down the list of accidents reported. I seem to have answered my own thread!
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

I remember the zoo and particularly the Zulu. A friend of mine bought a photograph of the Zulu into work. It was on its side, in a scrap yard. It looked intact. I will have to ask her to dig it out and I'll upload it. Thumbs up

Hi ajtb. The scrapyard you mention was Darkie Barnes yard at Baginton, I seem to remember a mention on this site of this subject, yet I cannot recall exactly where the Zulu ended up, someone on here will know what happened to it.

Wow Mayjan, what a fantastic photo! I recall the zoo standing where the Coventry Racquet Centre (or whatever its current incarnation is called!) now stands, but do you remember how visitors got to the entrance?

Do you know Tony I can't really remember much at all about the Zoo. Perhaps you will be able to enlighten me. Thumbs up

Hi. I don't know much about the zoo itself but I remember when they were building it, they had a lot of demolition materials from us, slabs, timber, or anything that could be re-used in the construction of the place. Before the zoo the land was used as a learner driver course.

Just found another good shot of the Zulu and it gives a better idea as to the layout. The Zulu Warrior

It appears this is all that is left of the Zulu.

I remember the chorus of "I zigga zumba zumba zumba, I zigga zumba zumba yay", sung with gusto and several pints by Caludon Castle OBRFC. Happy days.
