Is this the entrance to Whitefriars Lane from Gosford Street, Dutchman?
I'm not certain but it looks more like the one in Much Park Street? The Black Lion was a timber framed building whereas Whitefriars Gate is of stone construction.

It definitely is. Below is a crop from one of my 2005 photos and, apart from the rework, matches stone for stone....

No24 is completely wrong unless there was a radical renumbering at some stage.....
Yes, No 24 is in Jordan Well and I don't know the numbers but it's clearly the one next door but one to Freeth Street. 91 is the right way round, the features are correct even if the slope isn't. I've got no pictures of 36 but if it's the one I think it is, the doorway on the right matches up with a passageway into the back.
The picture on page 123 is particularly interesting as it's one of the few views of the end of Jordan Well looking at the south side of Gosford road. I think it's looking at the buildings next to 113.
Gosford street photo
The building left of middle in the right hand picture is, I think the tall building next to the Oak Inn and the gable end is the early version of the pub. The building on the right of the group is possibly the one on the left of the left hand picture. It might be the early version of the Sir Colin Campbell or the one next to it. And the ones after the Colin Campbell would be these, opposite Cox Street.

G'day Dreamtime
It looks like a grocers but but was probably destroyed in the Blitz so it's unlikely anyone here will remember it?

I think its more likely to be the buildings much further down (Nos 100-108) as demonstrated in this view from the Now & Then section:

Yes Dutchman, that's roughly the same position but the viewpoint on the sketch is slightly to the left. The building on the far right of the photograph is the same as the one on the far right of my snip of the sketch. Just to the left of that I think you can see the Sir Colin Campbell. The middle of the sketch could looking at it or the building to the left. There are no early photos of that view with the row intact that I've seen. On second thoughts it is probably further down. I haven' got pictures of either section. |

I realise we might have a picture of 36 Gosford Street.
Gosford Street North looking towards the New Inn
Just not sure which one it is on the picture. Is the Fourth building from the Left the Blue Pig? No 33? Sadly 36 is obscured by the cart. |

This is a photo taken in 1937 of a wedding of a (distant) relative in Gosford Street Baptist Chapel
British History Online states that : GOSFORD STREET General Baptist chapel was opened in 1869 to replace the chapel in Whitefriars Lane. The new chapel was built of red brick with stone dressings to the design of J. D. Webster of Sheffield, and provided sittings for about 700 persons. It stood some distance back from the street and was approached by an 'ornamented way'. A Sunday service in 1881 attracted 250 attenders.
After the destruction of St. Michael's Baptist Chapel, Hay Lane, in 1940, that church joined the Gosford Street congregation, whose chapel had also been badly damaged, and up to 1948 the united church worshipped in the lecture hall attached to the Gosford Street premises. By that date sites had been acquired at Meredith Road, Stoke, and Quinton Park for two new causes which were to be established under the control of a joint church called Gosford St. Michael's Baptist Church. Thenceforward ex-members of the Gosford Street chapel for the most part attended at Meredith Road and those from Hay Lane at Quinton Park. Gosford Street chapel was itself closed in 1951; it was sold in 1953 and was subsequently used as a commercial showroom.
Can anyone identify the location of the chapel and who's commercial showroom it became? Please!

North side of the street almost under the ring road.
Just to the right of number 18 was a chapel of some sort

It was directly opposite what is now the car park and next to the flyover. During the time I lived in Gosford Street is was known as The Curtiss Warehouse but I believe it was Marley Tiles before that? It was eventually replaced by a chicken takeaway called the Friar Tuck.
