Hi Helen, all I know is that it is titled "The Castle" King Street. It's next to a shop called Castle Stores. If you look in your copy, you will see it is just a page of pictures without any text.

Hi Helen. If you look in Cov Pub History, the picture in the book is actually The Castle at 51 Castle Street. It looks like the book is wrong?

Yes, it looks like the book is wrong. King Street didn't have those features.

I remember when a policeman on a box used to direct traffic at the top of Bishop Street.

Ooh, you had me going for a minute there! I was about to agree that the book had it wrong, but the picture on page 56 is quite correctly labelled "Castle (Elephant & Castle), Castle Street." (which is in Hillfields), and can also be seen on this pub page.

I think that there might be different versions. Like Mick, my copy has it at King Street. Poor Mick might have thought he was being gaslighted if it was just him.

Oh blimey, that must have been spotted and changed in one of the next editions then. I've only just noticed that my book is the third edition!

To be honest, any edition of the book is always going to be a long way behind the website. My 3rd edition was from 2015, only a year after first release, and since I launched the revamp of the pub site in March 2020 there have been literally many hundreds of edits, updates and additions - with still many thousands to eventually do! The book will always be pretty much out of date the moment it's released! However, having said that - there are still many pubs on the website that I've not yet got round to fully updating, and will still contain details that were written 20 years or more ago, on the original Real Ale Rambles site - and for those, the book will actually contain the more up-to-date information..... but then, how does anyone know which are the correct ones? A continuing dilemma! Cheers! Cheers

Hi Rob. Do you know the time difference is between the 2 photo's on the "Cov Pub History" site for the Castle on the corner of King Street and Bishop Street? It says that one is in the 30's but no mention of the other with the barren land going down Bishop Street. Cheers

I can't find a date for that first photo (below), which is now on Coventry Digital, but it's definitely post-war. The question is.... had it already closed for good - so, 1959 or after - or was it just "not yet open" for the day? I must admit, it looks so desolate, it does have a kind of "permanently shut" look about it!

Hello, Lovely picture that makes so many statements. Rare commodities, like the policeman, the unsecured bicycle & absence of litter.

Of the adverts I can find 3' 4 for 20 Bristol cigarettes fits with the late 50s, early 60s.
