Hi all,
Regarding our more recent thoughts about Bridgeman's "Ancient House" being further south in Little Park Street.... I've just done a large overlay comparing 1851 and a modern Google aerial view, and you can see it here....
https://www.historiccoventry.co.uk/misc/little-park-st-nowthen.php (Click on the map to toggle new/old).
Surprisingly (and a little bit disappointingly), the new straighter layout of Little Park Street means that the original house (or empty fenced-off plot where it probably used to stand) would've actually stood right on top of the Police Station!
Interesting also to note some other slight deviations, like the Gosford Street / Jordan Well street-line - and other things that haven't moved, like Whitefriar's Gate in Much Park Street and the Monastery. |

That's a very interesting map Rob, it even shows the gardens.
Incidentally I think I've now pinpointed The Roebuck

Looks like another boring empty space. Ridiculous waste of money. They could at least remove that awful bridge that's bolted into the council house while they're at it.
Speaking of old buildings, doesn't the Varsity pub have the remains of some old timbers inside it? I'm sure that there used to be a strange little bit of an old building in the area that is now the pub's entrance.

Isn't it terrible Flapdoodle. From the moment I saw it I thought it looked so out of place. It doesn't do the Council House justice at all. |

They've been fiddling around like this since 1989. It's not really working. I don't see what's wrong with that area as it is. I mean, it's a pretty dead space. No one really uses it, it doesn't go anywhere, it's not got anything in it apart from council offices and courts and other civic stuff, it just seems to be a plot of land that was left over from the demolitions after the war and no one really know what to do with it. Odd place. Typical of a lot of Coventry.

Aesthetically it looks fine (note the absence of trees allowing the building to take centre stage - please follow suit with the old college building in Earlsdon and Christchurch). Yes, that 'bridge' is a massive bugbear and out of keeping.
I have reservations. The seeming lack of distinction between road and pavement may cause problems, and the last times they did something like that (High St, Whittle Arches, Burges) they were ripping it out three years later. The change to the vehicle access means coming into town from J3 basically only gives you access to a couple of car parks and thats it. I think this will lead to a further reduction in people accessing the city centre rather than increasing it. |

I notice greenery to look upon for the council yet concrete slabs in Broadgate for the shoppers. |

You have to give it to the Coventry Council they know how to spend the (I presume) tax payers money.
How much did it cost to plant all the trees in the first place. |

It's wasting money because none of these schemes bring people into the city centre or attract any businesses. They just seem to be digging up places for the sake of it and not addressing the real problem. I never see anyone using these 'pocket parks'. I guess private investors have well and truly deserted the city centre now, though, unless it's student flats and fast food.

I hate it. Another step in wiping out any remains of historic LPS. Now we are losing any indication of the real road width. LPS should have been the last street to have something like this inflicted on it after all it has suffered down the decades.
LPS is still being slowly tortured to death.

I agree totally. I don't really understand why they are persisting with these endless schemes when the ones they have already done have not brought a thing into the city. Actually, I think these sorts of schemes really do highlight the poor quality of the post-war buildings. |
