Hi Jessie. The sign next door to the Umbrella was Deacon. There's a clearer picture here. |

I should've noticed it from this one Helen - It must've literally been falling down -

So just to tie these up - this is the earlier image of the LPY frontage (notice the change and Bushill's sign) -
....and here is Dad's Uncle Ray who lived in the court there on his wedding day standing in that very Archway -

Not quite Neil. There were two arches and the wedding party is under the second arch, looking slightly north. The wing you can see beyond the arch was originally a stable block at the rear north side.

I was getting mixed up with this one which is the LPS entrance showing from within the court. That's Trevor Yardley their son (my Dad's cousin) who was disabled sitting in his Bathchair greeting passers-by........

Two great personal photos Neil. Not just sweet reminders of people past but of places past too. There are details of the buildings that aren't anywhere else. The one of Trevor is worthy of a photographic award, with it's mixture of old, new and Trevor. There is a wealth of social commentary in it. |

Thanks Helen. I think I've mentioned Trevor on here before. He was well known at the time for him sitting in that archway. Apparently he was a very adept painter by mouth. Sadly I never knew him. |

Sorry Neil
Trevor didn't paint with his mouth. He played a xylophone with an old Bakelite cigarette holder in his mouth.
Incidentally speaking of the historic detail in that photo can you see the stone Mounting Block just to the right of the old dustbin? I was told as a child that this was to mount a horse. Also the interesting little window up in the right hand corner. |

It makes sense that it was a mounting block. It was the type of place that would have had one. |

Nice one Neil . The hospital is the one in the middle as far as I know. The one on the right was a girls reformatory (at least by 1888). Link about it here. "With money soon raised to purchase property in Little Park Street, and for the appointment of three doctors - Bourne, Mellor, and Arrowsmith. When the hospital opened in 1840, it held just twelve beds in one ward. "
