Helen / Anne. Thanks to my friend Cliff Berwick on FB, The CMC, pre-Swift so pre-1896? Cliff did not know where this was so I have passed on our info here if that's ok.
This is obviously the Cheylesmore view/face but I have added here due to our prior discussion on the factory.
What really caught my eye here is the age of the people in the picture! Many look like children.

I don't understand why you keep repeating these old photographs, photo 213 is the same photo as on 11 where it says it's the reverse angle!
Kaga.
No need to be so harsh. Helen provides wonderful information and unless I sit through years of posts I will miss out on posts from many years ago. Your comment may put doubts in the mind of others before a post is sent which is not how this forum works. It is not my intention to cause any offence but I will call out on what I do not agree with. In my view your contributions are very valued and add a richness to this platform and this is the case of all members.

Thank you, this is the feedback I have been asking for. There is no way I wanted it to sound harsh, it's just that I was always forthright, and so was Coventry a long time ago - you always said what you thought no matter if it hurt other people's feelings. Times change. I admire people on here far better than I, for most of mine is just memory.
Regards, Kaga. |

I admire your honesty. What we say and write is what we must own and we should take into consideration the responses from others. We all share a respect for each other here which at times can take a moment of thought prior to sending opinions. I do see that you did not mean offence to Helen. As for me I often suffer "foot in mouth" which is a burden I often have to apologise for. You can rely on my interjections right or wrong

Gumnut,
No one can admire this forum more than me. I waited almost seventy years for this to happen, not exactly though on this scale, but needed some help back in the fifties, no one was interested. I admire Helen enormously, I thought I was helping by remembering the past answer. But if that's how you felt then others would too, and you were right to pull me up.

Helen,
I have no idea what helps you. I have the same photograph as 212, it just says 'A damaged factory in Cheylesmore'. It also says Earl Street and the area didn't get hit until the very last thing in the morning, so was burning all next day. When the photo was actually taken I have no idea, but as the King arrived Saturday morning and those people were being stopped, I assume Saturday. |

#212 is definitely the same LPS factory as in #213 - the damaged brickwork outline is identical |

"I have no idea what helps you" Kaga
Neither do I, until I see or read it. As I'm trying to recreate the city before photography, I have a lot of sketches and paintings but they can be deceptive. I have an excellent map of the city, which includes very fine details of the building layouts, but I don't have a vertical scale, so sometimes a different building becomes a measuring stick even if it isn't one I'll recreate. When I started I ignored the factories as too new but sometimes the pictures of them hold clues eg post #149 shows me the timbers of the building next to the factory. #157 and #158 show vague details of the buildings and gardens around the factory. #189 shows the edge of the Ladies Seminary that is clearly not medieval and so can be excluded. Finding out the date the factories were built tells me that the previous buildings might have been photographed or sketched like the Ladies Seminary. Your tales of interiors and trades will be helpful when I come to try and bring life to the models. Many of the tasks people did were very similar to those hundreds of years earlier. Horses could climb the same gradient, that sort of thing. When you quote from the old books, you trigger thoughts about how the place looked. When you or others ask questions I have to properly look at my research, rather than assume I've assessed it properly. |

Just as Helen wrote... "no worries". Only a moment in time with many more to share. Drove over Sydney bridge only a few weeks ago! The tunnels never feel the same.

As the Australians say 'no worries' Whenever people ask questions, it makes me look harder at the answers. Photos do crop up again and again but the quality is often improved (but not in this case). Neil's photo is the new one and although it's not my remit, the factories can supply information, including scale for what I do want to know. In Nov 2012, I didn't even know Coventry had gate houses, let alone such a magnificent medieval past. If I'd read a fraction of the books I've raided for images, I'd know a lot more Kaga has the advantage of seeing a lot of the old Coventry for real at a date that is later than I'm searching so some of my vision of the city had come and gone by the time he walked the same routes.
No worries Helen. I have your back as we say "Down Under"

Photo 213 is not a photo taken of the bombed buildings, the photographer is standing around waiting for the King. The soldiers put the barricade across and the people had no idea why this was happening, and so he caught an unusual photo. All round the Council House and cathedral the barricades went up, we were ushered from the cathedral to a barricade in churchyard. If I am right then it's about 8.45am Saturday 16th November, the picture I believe was in the CET a few days later. This also makes me think the King drove up LPS.
This is the way I viewed the picture, and the penny has only just dropped. |

I doubt that it is the King in the photo - he was in uniform and would have been accompanied by dignitaries wherever he went!
