Thumbs up Yes, that much is known Anne but that was only part of the story. Not only do they not know what shade it was, they don't know what made it so durable. Urine was used to fix dye but perhaps there were other additives? Maybe Coventry widdle was special Wink They don't even know where the woad came from. Was it local? Was it English or did it come from abroad?

I checked the question about women in the Domesday Book and there were at least 20 including one called Asa here. Most seem to be widows. So alas, Godiva was not first or unique. She wasn't even the largest land owner amongst them.

Daimler Motor Company Limited. It then purchased from a friend of Lawson a disused cotton mill in Coventry for car engine and chassis manufacture where, it is claimed, the UK's first serial production car was made. From Wikipedia. Does this count ??

Not sure that it was the World's first Mick because I think that the first factory was in France in 1891 ish. It was probably the UK's first and the World's first successful man made fibre factory.
