Hi Morgana, You sound like one tough lady to me and probably know the true meaning of 'It's a cruel world out there'. I hope your days are brighter these days for you and your family. It's a pity the powers that be are not shoved out into the real world instead of sitting behind their city desks and arranging the lives of everyone, in some cases not for the best. Thank you scrutiny and Dreamtime, yes I learned what a cruel world it is out there when I was 19 when I was homeless with the two kids, now my daughter and her children, I've also learned it's not what you know, it's who you know, that is fact, which works both ways as authorities here have taught me well.

I believe that it is probably quite natural to be proud of where one came from. Born in the 40's (1944), growing up in Sewall Highway, was absolutely brilliant. I do remember, when in the RN through the 60's, being in New Zealand, 1963ish, seeing a Hillman car with the Three Spires on the front, feeling very proud, and glad to be a Coventrian. One other thought that hopefully belongs to this thread. Anyone out there remember the "Bagwash". Our mum was crippled, there was 4 of us children, so the washing was collected, in a bag, early morning, and returned washed but damp at tea time. I am sure it was the Co-op Laundry, located next to the Dairy, by Freddie's.

I am very proud of Cov. My husband is a Coventry kid too, if anyone asked me were I'm from I say Coventry but live in Hampshire (don't forget the Daimler.) All my family still live in Coventry so we come over a lot.

Hi Slash1, not the Bagwash but my Mum used the London Laundry, have I got the name right. Always came back wrapped in brown paper and tied with string. I am sure it came with a laundry book with the contents ticked off and washed. All the linen had a laundry label sewn on, that was before all these supersonic washing machines we have today.

My gran when she was putting the sheets through the mangle always said I feel like the bagwash lady.

There used to be a "bagwash" down Vecqueray St. As a "message", I would take people's laundry (usually in a pillow case, I think that is where the bag came into it) there and then collect it the next day and return it to get my sixpence.

My mother used to take the washing down to the launderette at the Forum when we lived in Burns Road. She would always say 'I'm off to the bagwash'. I presume this was a reference to the service mentioned in this topic. She also used to say if there was any shouting at the bottom of the street, 'It must be teddy-boys! despite the fact that this was around 1970!!!

I watched a bit of the old James Bond film "Goldfinger" over the weekend. I know we've all seen it many times but it's always a little thrill to see the brand new bright yellow fork lift truck with "Coventry Climax" painted boldly down its side posts featured in a scene, ostensibly at Goldfinger's factory in Switzerland.
