Sorry Neil, I don't know offhand but it was built over the south side of Well Street and that photo isn't of Well Street as far as I know. It was built over multiple properties including the old well and the Old Waggon and Horses pub. |

May 1944? - I thought the press were not allowed to print photos of military stuff prior to D Day. |

There was an article in May 1944 about the parade for "Salute the Soldiers" week which included the tanks, that picture was on the front page. Yes it is surprising that the picture was shown and obviously where it was. |

Maybe because it was an American tank? It was published on 18th May 1944 in the CET 'American tanks gave a distinct touch of realism to Saturday's Salute the Soldier procession through Coventry's Streets.' |

Just seems odd at a time when it was a criminal offence to photograph anything to do with the railways, let alone publish a railway photo in a newspaper. |

May be part of a deception to fool the Germans that not all forces were being assembled on the south coast for an invasion. |

I suppose that it was important not to publish anything that might be useful to the Germans but a one off procession would offer no aid and might act against the Germans by emphasising that the Americans were very much on our side. |

Thanks to 'our' Ben and Helen Tipping - the fabulous Tipping Gas Showroom Collection is now available on Coventry Digital. A reminder to those that haven't viewed before - it's free to use - you just need to register first. Some of my favourites include the ones on the roof with Corporation Street and Fretton House visible behind (before the Belgrade was built) -

These are definitely not my era but they're a fantastic record of the gas showroom! Inside and out. Please remember folks, we only bring a small selection back here and there are many, many more over at Coventry Digital. If you're ever lacking in something relaxing to do, have a wander through the photos there. Even if you don't remember these places, they're an outstanding snapshot of past times. |

What a wonderful collection of photos, they bring back the spirit of the 1930s when gas cookers and fridges were really the latest thing in kitchen equipment. I particularly loved the couple eating a meal in the showroom window with passers-by (from the Rex?) reflected in the windows. And 'Brisk' is a word you don't hear used much these days, more's the pity! |

This is absolutely the best image - fishtank meal as part of a promotion. Black tie invite only. This needs reviving. b p kyneswood
