Good morning Mr Blue Sky. I don't recall the lady you mentioned though it's possible my sister might have replaced her some years later. I remember the houses where you lived, that was the start of my paper round though at a later point I also delivered to the Paradise area as well. As I mentioned previously Bell Green Road was nigh on impossible to cross while the Morris was knocking off. Griffins shop was a goldmine in those days. Early morning there was a constant stream of men calling in for a Daily Mirror or a Sketch and 10 Woodbines though just after payday it would be 20 Players or Senior Service. I remember Harrabins coal yard, Buggins cobblers, Masdens decorating shop. Mr Masden's son Michael was at Courthouse School in my year for a time. Further down there was Harry's grocery shop and Bill Aubertin's tiny hardware shop. There was a narrow footpath that ran alongside the railway embankment all the way to Spring Road. Some years later the high rise flats were built on the field. A council flat is normally not high on most people's wish list though my brother had one high up in that block. It was a beautiful, well designed flat, very light and airy with fantastic views. Pity about the lift.

With the anniversary of VE day just round the corner, there were four of my cousins just a few years older than me lived between Proffitt Ave and Rosie's Garage on the Bell Green Road. None lived over five years after VE day from their war wounds.

Geoff, my memory is not very good but unless I am mistaken that was the time when I managed the newsagents formerly belonging to Underwood. I certainly remember a fierce winter when the daily papers arrived mid morning and myself, my wife and Madge Kirby, our assistant, had to deliver 10 rounds in the snow. I am afraid that I don't remember the lads delivering papers at that time except I believe there was a pair of twins possibly from Weavers Walk

Argon, the twins were probably Douglas and Ernest Annals.

Heathite, you could well be right. I seem to think that the twins may have been Salvationists

In that case you are both correct. The Annals twins were pals of mine at Courthouse Green and they did live in Shuttle Street. They played cornets in the Salvation Army band. We were in the same class all through our Courthouse Green years. It was a very happy school and we all got on well. Although most of us went to Caludon we were split up and went our separate ways. Older sister Grace.

Good evening, Walrus, your life followed mine, except you were a couple of years behind me. I attended Caludon,1955 until 1959, then joined the Royal Navy 1st November 1960. Just did my 9 years from when I was 18. Incidentally, although I lived in Sewall Highway, nearer to the Devon, 1958/59 time, delivered papers for Underwoods. Started off with what was considered a "girls round", as I was very small. 51 evening Telegraphs, Tackford Road, Nuffield Road and Mulberry Road, I think. Later on, I moved to Sewall Highway and Sullivan Road. That was 90 evening papers. On a Thursday and a Friday, very heavy for a little chap.

Slash 1 But wasn't Sewall Highway the first row of houses in Coventry to be built with indoor toilets?

The old Courthouse was once a coachhouse with paddocks, stables etc. Philip that would account for posts with rings in. It was near the the Morris gates and the common was once the farm, stretched over towards Henley Road, long before they built the canal and the Navigation pub. And yes it was outside the city. But the road was the main one out to Ansty and beyond in the days of the coaching era. The house itself I would imagine approached through half-grazed fields, pleasure gardens etc but when the canals came coaching took a back-seat, and I suppose it became derelict. But it was a dumb place to be, next to the Morris during an air-raid, as I found myself a couple of times.

Hello Phil. Just rejoined the site after some 7 years, was previously logged in as Warwick40 but could not remember old email supplier config so now signed in as 8 Nuffield Road which is where I used to live four thousand years ago... or so it seems. Did you know anyone in that street? Mrs Sanderson was my next door neighbour, had Griffins shop, post office etc
