Spot on Wearethemods, the Coventry Cross is in the Burges. Thumbs up Wow Neil, those are great photos and the only one I've seen looking the other way down the river. Double thumbs up Modern photos were getting impossible because of the foliage growth.

So whereabouts was that done then? I knew there were no images looking east from that point Helen hence the reason I jumped at the chance.

It would be the west side of the Burges looking east. I shall get the right bit of map and post in a minute or two. Roughly on what is the corner of Corporation street.

I was quite surprised by how much water was flowing Helen although it has been so wet. Alan's been talking to the Council about using the Illingworth building for future Artspace use. He actually got inside it a few weeks ago but the damage was more severe than first thought. There are some interesting details in the plans. The issue is not only the area where the river is so limited by space and the surrounding area not exactly attractive (the Cross Landlord told us he often finds needles and other 'Human' material all around the place - but the cost (as usual) as well. That area has in my lifetime always just been seen as a cut-through to and from Pool Meadow - I'm not exactly sure it'll appeal to many - it won't exactly be like sitting by the Thames!

I'm not sure how far back you'd have to go before the area wasn't grotty. In the 18 and 19 hundreds, Palmer Lane had a lot of stables and slaughter houses, including one over the river. Apart from unwelcome visitors, the backs of places are where people keep the bins and other scruffy stuff. Hard to mitigate.

Just to bring the conversation back on topic, I recall having driving lessons in 1969 at the Yorkshire driving school, based on the east side of the Burges. The cars were parked behind with access via Palmer Lane. I remember it as a shambles of old and new between the backs of Trinity Street and the Burges, it gave good practice of parking in tight spaces.

Funnily enough Choirboy Alan Denyer who I visited the Cross with mentioned the exact same thing about the driving school. It was around this spot (though I think the labelling is wrong on this CD image - I think No.7 was on the other side of Cross Cheaping - we mentioned Swears and Wells at 7 Cross Cheaping on the other thread regarding the bombed Bus. I'm sure that image looking up towards Broadgate is on the other side. The building on this one with the 'Woodley's' Ad is the Forbidden Planet outlet today at No.31 -

The driving school had a very small office and could well be the boarded up one between the Forbidden Planet and the Cross shown on streetview. Not sure but I have a vague recollection that the pedestrianised entry at the other end, next to "Down-Town" was wide enough for a Ford Anglia!

As per Manor House's post#97 - Forum image I've finally found a better image of that last remaining lived-in Court of Mr Morrell's. Big grin You can even see the same crate he was sitting on (though technically this was Burges) -

Alan Denyer (the chap behind the CET building before it was a Hotel and the LTB) has just sent me this. Work is starting on opening up the small Sherbourne section and as part of that they are clearing behind Number 21. Sadly there is not as much of Mr Morrell's (see the earlier pics in this thread) old Court as I'd hoped remaining but interesting nonetheless.....

Seems they must have removed the actual Court Dwelling section when Mr Morrell left -
