Hi Helen I had a feeling they would be readily available, but just to find it in this obscure part of eastern Australia was such a surprise. Assuming anyone in Coventry can go and buy it, I will keep this one on my shelves, and the grandkids will ultimately be able to see how the Christian Churches scared the sh*t, or the hell, out of (or into) their communities. Until very recently, Australia had a government that relied on that sort of strategy, so it won't be entirely foreign to them. I'm not sure what impact it would have on my grandkids, but if they can watch Game of Thrones without turning into bloodthirsty terrorists, and watch online salesmen without getting hooked, they should be able to cope with the (hopefully) ridiculous idea of Judgement Day! Fingers crossed!

Helen F, do you know who drew the picture of the church you put up on Nov 22, 2019? I've not seen it before. Mark

Thank you, NeilsYard. I've seen some of his other stuff, but never this picture. Marvellous. That and the Turner one are splendid.

Neil's right, Troughton did draw something very similar but I'm not sure that specific copy is his. It's tagged as Jordan Well (which it's not, it's the priory mill pond) by Henry Edridge. link Which would have made him a contemporary. There are a lot of similar views.

As I think we determined earlier in this thread, I think this was 1967 though Tony is going to try to confirm from the newspaper date. He watched it all happen apparently and tried to save that beam but it was stuck solid so probably ended up on the fire Sad
Hey, I found it! On a brief look around Holy Trinity Church today, during Heritage Open Days, we were allowed to view inside the little side chapel, just ahead and on the left as you go in - and inside there, hanging on the wall, is the original beam from the bell frame in the tower.... Big grin The little frame above it says "Main bell-frame in English oak made just before the Restoration of the Monarchy, 1660."

Hello, Quite a "Ding Dong". It's very easy to assume the obvious, when it isn't obvious. The events that I've attended there, never questioning where the sound of the bells is coming from, or where are the ringers!I Brill. Ps. On a recent train journey, I passed through a village called Brill.

I've just corrected my previous post to say that the beam was from the "bell frame in the tower", not the actual bell tower on the other side of Priory Row. It, of course, predated the external bell tower in Priory Row by a couple of centuries, as this beam was part of the frame inside the church's tower, which gave rise the structural problems with the stonework when the huge, heavy bells swung back and forth.

Great find Rob! We did say we were going to look one day. I'll pass that back on to Tony McSweeney if I may as he was the one who had that clipping. Thumbs up

Yes, it'll be good for Tony McSweeney to see it - and he's more than welcome to join us on here if he likes! Smile
