Hi My Grandfather was on the canals and left to buy a house on hall Green Road, my father was born in 1938 at No 126, Hall Green Road but I can't find this address anywhere. Was 125 - 127 maisonettes at any time in the past?

Question

Hi Phippo, welcome to the forum Wave It doesn't look like Hall Green Road had even numbers that high. In 1937 there was a Joseph Phipkin at 67 Hall Green Road. There was a Samuel Arthur Phipkin at 29 Alderman's Green Road. And a Joseph Phipken at 37 Hawkesbury Lane. If you don't mind, I'll move this to a suitable topic when you've seen this. Smile

Does anybody know was No125 or No127 maisonettes at any time in the past or did they let rooms out that might have had a separate address ?

The 1939 civilian register confirms that 125 and 127 existed but 126 would be on the other side of the road and no even numbers are listed in that range. You probably already know that there were Phipkins in Aldermans Green Road and Bell End wherever that is, but no Joseph of that age.

Hi everybody and thank you for your posts, on my father's birth certificate it definitely states No.126. Now I thought this could be a mistake but at Windmill Road cemetery his brother was buried in 1929 and has his address at the time as 126, Hall Green Road. Can't believe they can both be wrong so will have to keep looking but thank you all.

Hall Green Road runs along the Sowe for most of its length. By that time odds and evens were the norm, so the evens would be a trifle damp by 126. It's more likely that maisonettes would be 125, 125a etc. There was 31, 31a, 33 and 33a for example but they denote infill semis, not maisonettes. The even numbers don't go much above 44. Alternative might be 12b.... actually I think that I have it worked out. There were two 12s. The second was Towers and McNamara a doctors' surgery. so not 126 but 12b, at the doctors'.

My take on the apparent 'ghosting' of 126 Hall Green Road is the renumbering of streets/roads in Bell Green when it was swallowed up into Coventry. A friend of mine told me that Bell Green used to be a village in its own right. She lived on the BGR so she would know. She lived until 2010 just short of 100 years of age. Anyway, here's a pic of the said road. I don't have a full 1929 directory but fortunately I do have that page.

Brilliant Heathite. Double thumbs up Oh, I see, it just got renumbered. So Albert Boneham was at 59 Hall Green Road.

Hello Helen, not renamed but renumbered. When I was researching Bell Green Road some time back I discovered that the numbering started at the Riley Square end and ended at Stoney Stanton Road railway bridge - as was, now the A444. Now the numbering starts the other way around, beginning at the A444 end. I've never heard stories from folk who witnessed or experienced this renumbering, but that would be interesting. What a liberty!!!
