Sorry to harp on. The routine at Wetherspoons for food, is to find a table, note its number, then order food at the bar. There are various breakfast menu items. If I have the standard English breakfast with a tea or coffee, I come out with a smile and change from a five pound note. They do a farmhouse version of the breakfast but I could not cope with such. I hate to ever leave food. I had detention at school for ONCE not finishing my school dinner. I think it left its mark on me. I will not make any advanced notification to Wetherspoons, other than arriving there well before nine on Saturday morning. My wife has given me the WHOLE morning off, so don't worry. It fills up after ten with shoppers so please take that into account. I am quite excited & hope that this site that we all post on will be ever stronger for just saying hello to each other.

By Wetherspoons, do we mean Timothy Whites and Taylors?

Sad I was just across the road last week would have loved to come had it been last Saturday Oh my, would also have talked one of you into walking me round the city after the meet-up Lol (while the wife was shopping) just to see if I've missed anything of interest. Thumbs up I was told by one of the older street cleaners I was talking to to look out for a man riding a sports bike, he comes round almost every day and loves talking about old Coventry but didn't see him anyone who knew him or of him. Thumbs up

As small as it is, it is me in my pic. Honest! I am sure that once you have met the real historians & researchers from this site, you won't be too bothered about me.

Celia (my wife) and I hope to be coming, but we will be travelling from Worcestershire. By the time we have parked at the Memorial Park and travelled in on the park and ride, we might not be able to make it before 10.00. I hope some of you will still be there. You should be able to recognise me from my picture, although it is 12 years old now, but I have not changed much.

Sounds like this'll be a nice little get-together then, I look forward to it. 9:30am shouldn't be a problem for me, and I have nothing else planned for the rest of the morning. Our daughter Mandy took this photo of the other three of us a few years ago. I haven't changed very much, but my hair is noticeably thinner nowadays and I need reading glasses now to focus on the little screen on the back of my camera!!! Sad Me!

The picture looks like the dreadfully artificial reconstruction of Spon Street. Oh that we could restore it to its original, albeit rather grubby, format.

I definitely agree with that. When I saw pictures recently of how Spon Street used to look I felt quite sad. I don't wish to suddenly be older, but I do sometimes wish I'd had the chance to walk some of our streets before all the terrible changes. By the way, did anyone on here ever see this other forum, on which a wonderful old photo of Spon Street was posted by some jammy so-n-so who'd been given a load of amazing old negatives of Coventry? http://www.urban75.net/vbulletin/threads/344324-Old-Negatives/page12#291

Rob - This is something I lend out to friends to upload their old negatives on to a SD card, it's a free standing copier and doesn't need a computer £29 out of Aldi, they do the work Lol then I just upload them to a DVD for them. Thumbs up I also get interesting old negatives given me which I copy that would be lost forever.

In the late 1960s I had to fight my way through the shoppers in Spon Street on a Saturday morning in order to reach the city centre, and that was in spite of it being cut in half by the ring road and subway. There were still a decent number of shops on the north side of the road despite the best efforts of the council to put them out of business. These days, you could hear a pin drop in Spon Street on a Saturday morning it's so deserted. I feel sorry for anyone born later than me as they will never experience the sights around Coventry that I did. Sad

The mother-in-law lived in the row of flats on the left as you're going to the subway. About that time her sister lived across in the big block of flats. If I remember right theirs was two blocks at one time. After dropping my things off at the Travelodge we went there to park up in the street then walked back into town, as we use the bus to get about Lol it's free. Hope you all have a good meet-up.

Thank you for a lovely time at Wetherspoons this morning. What a small world too! I was once told that getting old is when we look back more than looking forward, but I can honestly say that on this site, I look forward to reading what is still to come about the past as well as what is ahead of us. Wishing you all well. Philip

Well, how did this meetup go? I would loved to have been there but a 400 mile round trip would have been a bit much. As compensation my wife made me bacon and mushroom rolls (sorry, batches). I pictured you all there looking around trying to identify each other and I also pictured Dutchman lurking furtively in the background making observations and taking notes (just joking Dutchman). Anyway I hope you enjoyed yourselves and hopefully will see a few photos here before too long. Alan
