Hi Philip, the song 'The Happy Wanderer' comes to mind........... and as I go I love to sing with a knapsack on my back. Wink Big grin

My mother bought the original recording. It was a big hit in England the year I was born despite being sung entirely in German.

Hi all Wave & thank you both, We have enjoyed a bril day out. After lunch in Shrewsbury, because of a points problem at Wolverhampton, our train was diverted via Crewe, so we took advantage of that, travelling over a line which was outside of our boundary. Again, that is the versatility of our go anywhere ticket. We eventually travelled to Leamington via Snow Hill & Moor St., returning to Coventry past the Memorial Park. A pose aboard the 9.02 from Cov to NEC, this morning. Then, waiting for our train home from Leamington. We were still in Leamington at 5.15, yet I was home in under an hour. Knowing where the short cuts are for changing buses is of great help. Good old Coventry. Wave Watching a class 66 go by at Leamington, which had travelled from Coventry.

And to prove that Philip is correct, here is the same train passing Foleshill just before 17.00 !

Hi all & thank you Midland Red Wave I am having a house & garden do-do-day today, but my enthusiasm for being out & about is quite obvious from my posts. What a pip', that Midland Red pictured the same train about half an hour before I did. For someone not living inside the West Midland (county), these wander tickets are even better value than they are for me. My bus pass takes me to the central areas that the rail dayranger ticket covers. If you would like to try one, may I suggest, consider the dayranger ticket first, which with a rail-card costs £14. If the bug bites & you feel comfortable, then go for the £61 seven day ticket which works out at less than £9 per day & covers a much larger area. I will edit this post with a map diagram for you to see just how extensive the seven day area is. Wave This whole area for a cost of £61 for seven consecutive days. The weekday start time is 9am. No time restriction at weekends or bank-hols. Even if I have a day off it is still about £10 per day. "Oooooooooooooooow I do go on", sorry! Oh my This is the single dayranger area. Not quite so extensive but still very good.

I see the remnants of Foleshill Station are still visible. Surely it would be much cheaper to rebuild what is already there than to construct an entirely new station which will hardly ever be used?

Hi all Wave Hi Dutchman. The original Foleshill station was the far side of the Lochurst Lane road bridge in the distance. There is not much left of that. Foleshill Goods yard was immediately to the right of the picture. I will see what pictures I can find. Wave What you might be seeing are the empty flat trucks which I had to look several times at. When the train went through Leamington, even passengers were making comments about the length of the mostly empty train. This Warwickshire site pic from June 61' shows the same view. Under the bridge can be seen the then still used platforms. Warwickshire Railways ps. Just to the right of the bus is the roof of the small chapel which was my Sunday School. I liked it there as I could sneak out to train-spot!!!

About 2005, a coal train became derailed & caused further damage to the remains of the down platform. Then to make it worse, during track relaying & repair, both a loco & several ballast trucks became derailed on the up line. I will make it my business to see just what is left when the growth has died back later in the winter. Wave

Ah, I see now Philip Cheers I mistook the concrete signalman's staircase for a passenger staircase and the signalbox platform for a passenger platform Blush

Hi all Wave This is one of the reasons why I so enjoy sharing on here. The fact that we are able to pool our memories & thoughts on such a range of subjects, then at just a touch of a button in our lounge, we have all of the resources of a library which we can then air, one with another. 'Dan Dare' stuff from when I was at school. Wave Cheers

I must agree with you on that one. I am only in my mid 40's but have found so much out by what people write down on this site. Memories are made of this. Even talking to people in the street, or on a bus can stir a memory. I had the good fortune to meet a couple today, that said about a Pirate being buried with all his loot in St. Mary Magdalen church, here in Coventry. Story or not, its a memory for them. Happy Memories Philip. Thumbs up
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

Yes, Baz is only a baby yet. I have always considered myself a cheery person, will always give a smile, 'good mornings' and 'hello's' to anyone when walking the pooch. A smile does not cost a cent and to get one back is worth a million. So it is lovely to be able to be 'out and about' and I would enjoy it more to bump into Philip and Pam at Wetherspoons. Hope you both had a good day Philip. Thumbs up Wave Happy {:O)

Hi all, Wave Just home now, Dreamtime. We both enjoyed porridge with maple syrup at Wetherspoons, as we were earlier there at ten this morning. Been to Kenilworth & Hatton Park, enjoying none stop sunshine. Wave ps. The porridge was really good. We were like two of the three bears. Big grin

Its funny how people working (like myself) cannot wait till Friday comes along, sort of wishing your life away really, Yet when you pass a certain age and have free time in the week, you wish for those days back again. My life will not change until I'm 66 years young, thanks to the Government. And its on the cards that it could be 68. Sorry, going off the thread a little. But I do enjoy the week ends when I can look around town, and spot things to put on this site, eg The Beehive, The Coliseum, etc. Talking to people is great, even on a website, memories of youth and not so distant past, brings people together to share, History, memories, and detective work. Off to find at about this pirate and his loot now. Thumbs up
Always looking forward to looking at the past.
