The Coventry I Remember, by M. S. Garratt I shall remember the city I love Her tall spires gleaming, gold tipped above. Godiva processions, the ancient fair, And where the centuries met in Broadgate square With glittering windows of bright modern shops And above on the skyline, old mossy rooftops, Peeping Tom staring at all who passed by The great market clock, n'er telling a lie. I shall remember the beauty of dawn That shone on the wreck that November morn. Gone, the old buildings the pride of the city And homes of the poor, Oh Lord have pity. Yet brave were the smiles that shone through the tears Though night must come with horror and fears, And still the proud spires looked up to the sky Godiva's fair city would never die. I shall remember the dear friends I knew Who gave up their lives "True Coventry Blue" And the sirens that screamed as they laid them to rest In one long grave forever blessed. Our great Cathedral, dim and all holy With quiet sanctuary and care for the lowly Where the spirits of those from ages passed Did join in our prayers until the last. I must remember 'ere Christ was dead In pain and anguish still he said "Forgive them for they know not what they do" And so on the day when our dreams come true, When the last "All clear" has died away, Let me remember lord that I may pray, My life forever more shall worthier be Of those who died for Coventry
I think that this sums up brilliantly the true spirit of Coventry and Coventrians

Coventry Remembered My mother came from Donegal And she kept it in her soul My father's home was Sunderland And he came to dig the coal Both of them came here for the work And swore that one day they'd go home Now they lie in Foleshill cemetery There's nowhere left to roam With a shamrock in my turban And engine oil for blood I'm as Coventry as Godiva And it's done me as much good. My Father came before the war And he told me from his heart What Hitler couldn't bomb flat, The council pulled apart. The streets they built for people They knocked down for roads for cars To feed the maw of industry They'd let the people starve. With a shamrock in my turban And engine oil for blood I'm as Coventry as Godiva And it's done me as much good. The hospital where I was born Has been made into a hotel The first school that I went to Has been changed as well There's houses where we used to play And cars parked where we carved our names 'cause the children stay at home now And play their console games With a shamrock in my turban And engine oil for blood I'm as Coventry as Godiva And it's done me as much good. And on the bus to school each day It always was the crack, That as it went round Broadgate To jump off the platform at the back; Now Peeping Tom's the lucky one As he pops out each hour with the chimes 'Cause he's blinded and cannot see The changes wrought on Broadgate through the times. With a shamrock in my turban And engine oil for blood I'm as Coventry as Godiva And it's done me as much good. And most nights you would find me Drinking in the Golden Cross Six hundred year old timbers And countless years of dross But the other taverns of my youth Are gone now from the town The Smithfield, Waters, The Bear, And the others, all pulled down. With a shamrock in my turban And engine oil for blood I'm as Coventry as Godiva And it's done me as much good. The Sky Blues were my team But they faltered through the seasons From Wembley to League One, and we can't disclose the reasons. They took us from the heart of town, To a gasworks out at Foleshill Prettier then Highfield Road, And of course, much more commercial. With a shamrock in my turban And engine oil for blood I'm as Coventry as Godiva And it's done me as much good. But now I guess I'm getting old And years have made me bitter, I'd pack my bags and leave the place but I'm Coventry and I'm no quitter. Hitler couldn't break us And neither will recession The chamber of the prince Will stand strong against aggression With a shamrock in my turban And engine oil for blood I'm as Coventry as Godiva And it's done me as much good. The Rover's gone, and so's the Jag. The Matrix and The Humber Massey's is a memory Like Peugeot and others beyond number. I suppose they'll say it's progress And I really should be grateful But they've taken the soul out of my town And what they've done is hateful With a shamrock in my turban And engine oil for blood I'm as Coventry as Godiva And it's done me as much good.

I love it what a great ode, I agree with all those words, it could be made into a song.
