On 30th Jul 2018 6:48pm, Not Local said: I know very little about trams but a quick look on the net suggests it could be a 'Feeder Box' which had the function of a junction box and switch box combined. A tram's overhead supply was split into sections to allow for repairs and so the individual sections could be shut down without closing the whole system. Each 'Feeder Box' tapped off a cable running along the street, usually underground, and then passed the power supply through a switch to the overhead supply. There is a photograph of a similar structure at the Crich Tramway Museum but it does not say what it is. That one is marked 'BTH' which signifies electrical equipment. Hope this helps. I may of course be totally wrong.
I went to Crich some years ago, but don't remember seeing such a box; however, BTH is a giveaway. British Thompson-Houston: they had large buildings in Rugby, and later became the GEC. One of the buildings had BTH carved into the stonework at high level, years after the BTH name had been dropped.

The box/column is absent in this photo from Pinterest. Can anybody compare the photos to help determine when it appeared/disappeared? Peter.

Prof, I remember those old three wheeler basket delivery push carts, mainly for bread I believe, waistcoat, rolled up sleeves, typical dress of the thirties summertime. The tram with the central aisle bench where you sat back to back, on top deck, always hoped you would stop by a bedroom window and see something spectacular - never happened. You could buy a little Bakelite telescope from Woolies for a tanner, boys being boys. Those the days of the old pea-shooter, fired from the top deck, then play innocent, Oh yes, happy memories, thanks for the reminder. Thumbs up

What a welcome sight Neil. If only Hertford St could return to the fine street it was before!

I've done a bit of editing on the image to make it a little clearer (I hope). Is it something to do with the tram operation as it appears to be aligned with where the single track splits into two?
I think it's one of these:

This is in Audenshaw, North Manchester and I often drive past it. It is said to be a disused transformer for the old tram system which has been kept as a landmark.
