It does say 1936 on the top there doesn't it. Brill detective work again though Helen - we'd literally be lost without you.

Blush It really is teamwork. Troughton, Brookes, Bunney, Wingrave, the Board of Health, Britain From Above, the post war City Engineers photographers, Ordnance Survey, various artists, photographers and our 21st century team. Heathite's mastery of the directories, Anne's ingenious newspaper searches, your fantastic hunter, gatherer skills and the specialisms and memories of various members. Not to mention Philip in charge of the cheering section. All pulled together by wonderful Rob. Dream team. Big grin For the era in the photo of the Chapel, Bunney is very useful because he painted a lot of views, hundreds. He could see the demolition of the 1700 and 1800 era buildings just as Troughton could see the demolition of the medieval. He overlapped with Wingrave but captured more of the small spaces of the city and fewer grand houses. His images aren't as detailed as a photo but some info is better than none.

And what a team! BTW I've only just noticed that face of that 'Hall' on the right hand side of this one then - Victoria Mills in the background!

Just looking through this and am wondering if this is the same building that was discussed in 2015 with a Britain From Above posted by Dutchman. I was looking because there is a picture in my "Coventry up to date" 1912 book of what says just Congregational church and I can't make up my mind if it is the same building, it just says Coventry.

Do you mean this photo, Anne? Yes that's it. It looks like the curved end is to the left but that's an interior wall. The front looks too close to the road to house the curved end facing the street but that is I think because the road had been widened.

Yes, Helen that's the one. I have also found it on prewar Britain from Above, so it is not the one in my book. The picture I have is Warwick Road.

Helen, this one has your name written all over it Big grin Charabanc noted this one on FB. Description reads These images are from The Building News Jan 18th 1894. The sepia images are taken from water colour drawings by A J Mavrooorato dated 1893. The only place I thought was West Orchard looking east towards Cross Cheaping but doesn't seem to fit anywhere I can see.

I've gone weak at the knees. It's not very far from the place you're still looking for. Woohooo! Artist - Mr Alexander James Mavrogordato. Born 1869. Died 16 February 1947

Oooh. Cook Street ahead, St Agnes Lane to the right and Silver Street behind?

Right location, Neil, but you're looking the wrong way Thumbs up The big 3 storey building is the Fox Inn (only image I've ever seen of the inn). Distant left is Silver Street. Round to the right is Rood Lane. Were there any more Cov paintings? Big grin

I'm fairly sure that I've worked these out - both the same set of buildings but from different sides - Court 2 London Road, but the side facing the street with the adverts is actually Paradise Street with the camera looking west. Paradise Street was built by at least 1888, cutting through what had been cottage gardens and raising the level of the ground next to the buildings. It's probable that London Road was much raised too but the wall facing the main road was a stable. The passage on the left of the first photo gave access to the gardens. The area was originally known as The Salutation Inn Yard. The entrance on the right of the next picture is probably the entry into Court 2 and the small building on the right is the stable. If you had peered into the gateway, you'd have seen the view in the first photo, looking roughly south. Forum image

Same map as on pub history, but a bit clearer. All looks good from Helen's clarification. Thumbs up

This is a tough one but on the offchance someone recognises it - anyone know where this is? Old house My wild guess is that it's the Seven Stars Farm at Whitley but I only have very flimsy evidence for it,
