Looks a very narrow road, doesn't look like a main road, even with tramlines, the property left is a pub as you can make out smoke room

They did Marina but this isn't Spon Street.

Some good theories here. Yes, there is a set of chimneys in line with the street. It is a narrow road but many of Coventry's streets were fairly narrow for main roads. There is a pub to the left of the picture though there is no obvious name on it. The earliest pictures of Spon Street look unpaved, not even cobbles though they may have been buried under muck. The later pictures show tarmac but there are a few images from both ends of the street that show cobbles and tram lines. There's even one of the lines near the rail arches at Spon End. The Wealden buildings hint at the older parts of the city but in some directions the early buildings went well beyond the city walls. It would probably be one of the early main roads.

If you look very carefully on the pub sign on the left you can just make out something like HORSE or HOUSE but only space for a few letters in front of that. There was a pub called REDHOUSE at 483 Stoney Stanton Road but I can't find anything about it. I just wonder if that is too far out of town to have had the carnival.

Here are two sets of pictures. The right hand pictures are of the mystery location. One from the picture I linked to earlier and another in the same sequence that shows further down the road. The left hand pictures are of my guess for location. The left and right pictures are not from the same time and I know that in picture 3 there was a new building in the centre of the shot built after the photo was taken. nb there are slight differences between the camera angles and I've stretched the left hand pictures slightly to make the shapes clearer. Do you think these pictures are of the same locations?

They certainly look very similar Helen. I have been looking through some of my books and there weren't many streets that had these 2 storey houses. Also the pavements are quite wide and are paving slabs not cobbles. It looks like your comparison pictures also have wide pavements. Are these pictures from a book that I might have that may be a little clearer.

Hi Anne Wave both left pictures are from the web though for the life of me I can't remember where I got one of them. Both sections are cropped from the bigger images to show the relevant sections and if I showed it all, it would be obvious to some where the location is. I want to see how others build up the clues to see if my reasoning was sound. The wide pavement is a feature at different parts of the road but not others, possibly due to the newer buildings being set further back from the street with a view to widening. I'll reveal my thought tomorrow.

There's a Black Horse pub in Spon End, but this was not always a pub, given that the pub name is across a window.

Apart from Spon St, other lengths of single track tramlines were Queens Rd, Butts, Allesley Rd, Albany Rd, Earlsdon St, Bishop St, Lower Ford St, Far Gosford St, Paynes Lane and King William St, plus others further afield where the carnival would presumably be unlikely to venture. Though there were other lengths prior to 1940, there doesn't seem to be room for double track unless the pavements were subsequently narrowed.

Funny MR I was just looking at there as well, looks like a single tram line and 2 storey buildings.

With pictures of Coventry down it's hard to find picture links to illustrate things but does anyone have any pictures of the distinctive features of the mystery street? The Wealden building in the middle is quite unusual. Artists tended to document the more impressive buildings, unless this street is way out (and for all I know it could be Nuneaton or beyond) you'd expect one of them to capture it.

A better distorted version of the second pictures with the key features marked in red. The green section denotes where there were new buildings after the left hand photo was taken.

I think this Google Streetview is proof enough - look at the William Hill building and compare to the original!
