More interestingly, here's a photo from about 1970 - the sign for Connop being next to that Anglia, with the Rose & Crown being just behind.
What a small world Rob, my grandparents lived at 20 Druid Road from late 1920's until 1933. As there was some spare ground next to no. 20, my grandfather who was a builder bought the plot of ground and built his own designed house on it which was numbered 20a. |

If the bus stop at the rear of Owen Owen, sorry, Primark, is going to be a pick-up and drop-off point, I wonder will they have to widen the roadway (in other words, revamp part of the recently revamped Ironmonger whateveritsnameisnow, as we've seen when we've been out and about that traffic cannot easily pass a stationary bus there! |

I don't understand why they keep wasting money on this area - it was revamped a few years back as part of that Phoenix Initiative, then they changed it all a few years later, then they created that utterly dreadful 'Ironmonger Square' and now they're revamping it again.
The whole problem with this city is that they keep revamping roads and creating squares, but they're not creating anything actually in the squares or on the streets! What a waste of money Ironmonger Square was when it's just full of junk food and bookies.

Idiocy is repeating the same actions and expecting a different outcome. High St is another they routinely dig up and re-lay every 5-10 years. Then after massive expense it doesn't really look any different or do anything new.
Imagine the money that could've been spent on properly changing the city centre instead of on these little 'tarting up' projects over the years. |

As I got my answer on one topic here it's all to do with getting funding. I agree with what you say AD they can get funding for messing up the town but not change for the better. I recall an Irishman who was working on the glass walk, telling me they had funding for either £3m or £5m to build that glass walkway which you can't walk, down by Sainsbury's years ago. I along with others would rather have spent all the funding putting Coventry back to streets with their magnificent buildings like Hertford Street, also Spon Street prior to war. Marvellous how they can get funding to trash but not to repair our historic buildings which end up getting knocked down. Seems it's keep up with the Joneses to look like any other big town or city. No imagination there. I would also have applied for funding for an RHS garden to be put not far from the town as these do attract a lot of people, I'm sure Keresley, Coventry, would have been better known for an RHS garden, rather than houses, which which would have attracted visitors and not far from town, but instead it has driven the locals to sell their homes which have lived here for years, also even better known than storage units that plight the old Coventry Colliery land. I would also introduce like Bristol, also another small town down south has done, our own printing of Coventry money so the money stays in the town. |

I don't really understand what they are trying to achieve with this. Trinity Street is just a bland, non entity of a shopping street that's not really got much in the way of shops anymore. It just links the bus station with the precinct (very badly). |

Anyone who uses the bus stops in Trinity Street on anything like a regular basis will tell you of the chaos which constantly occurs as buses cannot reach their stops, or leave them, because of overcrowding - and the danger there can be to pedestrians and bus users
So any work to improve this situation is certainly welcome |

Hi all,
Trinity St will become in effect an extension of the bus station. The stops will all have inset bays, in order to accommodate more vehicles. Similar to the bays on the White St side of the present Pool Meadow bus station. Hope that helps. |

Yet there's a massive station designed specifically for them yards away which usually has loads of empty berths!
Trinity St etc are used for buses because people complained Pool Meadow wasn't convenient. But when the authorities suggest pulling it down as it wasn't cost efficient without all the buses using it the same people complain over the proposed closure despite themselves saying it's in the wrong place! So to make it efficient they made the buses use it. And the people complained it wasn't dropping them off where they wanted to be. And round and round we go. |

Well I don't use the bus. It's cheaper to drive and pay to park, not to mention far more convenient with four of us. Why didn't they sort this out during their last refurb of Trinity Street? Or the one before that? They built that desperate 'Phoenix Initiative' and planned to remove the bus station and replace it with city centre 'hubs' (which seems sensible, as when I did use buses I always found that Pool Meadow was useless anyway and there were certain areas on streets around the city centre that were far more convenient) but a few people got up in arms about that, so they redid Trinity Street again, tore up the road system again, and then tried to force bus users to use Pool Meadow (which was bleeding money). Now they seem to be going back the other way again... Yet in that time the city centre has been abandoned even more, Trinity Street is a dead street of downmarket stores and junk food, and the Phoenix Initiative has... erm, been extinguished and not really worked... Focus should be on getting people back to the centre, not fiddling about with it for the sake of the handful of pensioners and students that seem use it these days.
I tend to think that they ought to let things develop organically... Instead they haven't learnt from the past when they tried to control people with the Precinct and Donald Gibson got the hump because people didn't follow his routes. Cities develop organically and the buildings and streets are just a consequence of where people want to go. If routes are poorly designed or don't go to where people want to go, then we'll always find short cuts or just not use them (such as the way people tend to use the cut through by the library to get to Corporation Street and don't bother with the Precinct area towards Corporation Street, which is now filled with empty units - the inflexible Precinct can't be adapted as easily as traditional streets, unfortunately).
The thing is that if the bus station had been removed and replaced with some sort of venue for entertainment/leisure it might have provided the boost that 'Phoenix' needs to sustain businesses there in the evening...
