History of the Route January 1955 New Service introduced between Broadgate and Purcell Road via Trinity Street, Hales Street, White Street, Bird Street, Stoney Stanton Road, Harnall Lane East, Swan Lane, Swancroft Crescent, Heath Crescent, Valley Road, Blackberry Lane and Sewall Highway, terminating at the junction of Purcell Road and Sewall Highway. July 1956 Extended southwards from Broadgate, through Cheylesmore to Willenhall via High Street, Little Park Street, Quinton Road, Daventry Road, London Road, Robin Hood Road and Remembrance Road. In the Fire Station shot, where was the Ford Pop turning out from?

The end of Palmer Lane, next to Mills and Mills

It looks like it was coming out of Palmer Lane, which ran from the Burges to the bottom of Trinity Street. When I lived in Coventry I used it as a short cut many times. At one time you could even park in some bits of it, as well as in Trinity Street itself. When that picture was taken, cars used to park in the middle of the road too.

Thanks MR. That's one bit of Coventry we didn't demolish, maybe that's why I could not remember it too well.

The shop on the corner of Trinity Street and Hales Street was George Wake, fishmonger. Parked outside is his Ford van with pictures of a salmon fish on both sides. Mr Wake designed this by getting a salmon and cutting in to separate shapes so that it spelt out G E WAKE, the letter G was the head and the KE the tail. It was signwritten by Joe Connop of Connop signs Walsgrave Road. I used to visit their workshop with my Grandfather on a Saturday morning, would be about 13 yrs old. Perhaps someone has a photo of this as it was well publicised at the time.

Is it just me, or does every 'development' they do in Coventry make the city centre look even less like a city and more like a load of random clutter? Having spent years tearing the streets apart and putting down all sorts of clutter (including bits of metal and canopies) they are now tearing it all up. Do they really know what they are doing?

Thanks Flapdoodle, no they don't know. This is what I have been saying all along. They are turning it into 'any old city' which you drive straight through instead of keeping it as Old Coventry a place to go to, linger and enjoy. OK you can keep up with progress without turning it into rubble in the meantime. Nothing stays up long before it is pulled down again by some bright spark who is getting paid to be a so called town planner. Bring all the flak on - I am ready.
