Canals around Coventry

Hi AD, no need to apologise. I get your point but I'm sure you'll agree that the approach to the basin up Bishop Street is dire and needs some serious attention - to be honest I think the nicest looking thing in Bishop Street at the moment is the sign saying canal basin on the stairs to the bridge, but we could go on forever about ideas for the basin and loads of other locations in Coventry. Will anything ever be done - I doubt it anyway. On a happier note may I wish you a merry Christmas and happy new year

As a 13 year old I used to go fishing in the Coventry canal near to the Cash's Lane bridge Foleshill, caught a few roach and perch, I mostly liked the peace and quiet. Sometimes myself and my Dad would go fishing at Frankton.

Trundling along the Coventry Canal towards the Ricoh, at the foot of the steep slope was this sign a little bit of history of the Coventry Canal.

The Newcomen beam engine that use to power the water from a deep well into the canal this engine used to be in the Engine House which now is listed in Longford at Hawkesbury Junction. LINK

Today trundling on the way to the Ricoh to meet something special - no not the free radio phantom, something far better. Also what came after this. Even a friendly wave.

Thought I might give a canal question for a change. Does anyone know the original purpose for this bridge built over the canal leading to the Wyken Basin. It formed part of my stamping ground as a kid and a teenager around the clod banks and didn't seem to serve any particular purpose besides getting to the other side of the canal, no road just natural walking tracks. This was taken about 1960 and I suppose would have disappeared when the M6 was built.

There are, were, many of those little bridges. When the canal was built it sectioned off part of a farm so the bridge was there for the farmer to move his cattle across or whatever. Even the motorways have the bridges for just the farmers.

Hi scrutiny, Hi all Thank you for that. Brill! The railway term for those bridges was occupation bridges. I remember that one in Wyken.

Today I trundled with my grandson down the road to the Greyhound pub, Longford before rain sets in, it was lovely and sunny. We had one drink, chatted to two ladies. We had a chat to a couple on one of the narrowboats from Leicester, the man said he was appalled at the rubbish and graffiti from the Coventry basin by the Ricoh. He measured the lock depth at Sutton Stop, Hawkesbury Junction as some might know it, with his stick for us too, then they continued their journey. We then were chatting to the narrowboat gentlemen having a laugh, they take the football fans, have a drink and then dropped off at the footy, they had an hour before returning to pick the fans up. I met an old neighbour Mr Edwards in Grange Rd, who was born in one of the old cottages by the Greyhound pub. We had our little chat about days gone by and I discovered he used to fish with my cousin Garth, now deceased. I had an enjoyable day, returned home to a cheese and beans baked potato.
