I think you can excuse Midland Red as he posted a letter to Coventry in the oldest "Penfold" in the country? |

Last year, I posted a photo of the oldest post box in the UK
This week, I came across one of the newest - a plastic-coated stainless steel lamp box, of which about 200 have so far been introduced around the country

ROTFL Well done.
I'm guessing that it's black because it's no longer a real box. |

It was red - Alamy stock photo - but out of use for years though, I've only known is as red until I saw it today. I don't go past that way a lot so don't know when it was painted black.

After leaving school my first job was in the Post Office, but I get fed up of walking the streets. As a young postman we worked either morning shifts or afternoon shifts. On afternoon shifts I collected from that particular box as well as one in Little Park Street and the one at the main GPO in Hertford Street. That would have been 1959/60.

If anyone wants to see an Edward VIII box there is one at the A45/Clay Lane junction, Yardley, Birmingham.

Just returned from a few days on the Isle of Wight (glorious! ) with a "full set" of pillar boxes
Victoria : Osborne House
Anonymous : Bonchurch Shute, Ventnor
Edward VII : York Avenue, East Cowes
George V : Victoria Grove, East Cowes
Edward VIII : Melville Street, Sandown
George VI : Main Road, Havenstreet
Elizabeth II : Esplanade, Sandown On 11th Sep 2017 6:16pm, Osmiroid said:

King Edward VIII is the rarest monarch to find on a postbox. As Edward abdicated and was never crowned, only 161 pillar boxes were made during his reign. Many of these were vandalised following Edward's abdication or had their door replaced with a door containing the cypher of a less contentious monarch. The Isle of Wight is exceptional in having two Edward VIII pillar boxes still in active service. |
