Anne proves what a champion she is, yet again
Neil, the page is from a book called Coventry Views and Reviews (illustrated) up-to-date. A real treasure and one worth scanning for inclusion in Coventry Digital. All about Coventry business printed about 1896. Packed with pictures and details. I'd rate it as one of the must haves but it only comes up rarely and isn't online as far as I know. Rob has a copy, as do I.
Mod's note: Discussion of this book continued here. |

I think this is probably the most appropriate thread as we don't have a dedicated one for Howard St - looking along possibly taken from the then new Phoenix House which went up circa 1960 - You can see the Alma Tavern on the corner of Howard St and Stoney Stanton Road - Thanks to Mark Tattam on the "Coventry we Used to Know" FB page -

I always thought the area was called Paradise and Eden St was in the area, and Paradise St ran from Parkside to London Rd / Gulson Rd. Nicholson

Hi lolipop. A Paradise Street did run from Parkside to London Road but the area called Paradise was up towards Foleshill. The area was named after a farm, which did lend itself to a lane but it was later renamed Eden Street see a discussion here. The photo is out of my knowledge range.
Was Coventry determined to be confusing, such that they renamed different roads with recycled names? |

Hi Helen, according to Google Maps Paradise St is still in Parkside, the old buildings, I presume, have now been replaced and are now part of the University.
As I always understood it Paradise was or is a district along the Stoney Stanton Rd just before Courthouse Green and adjacent to Edgewick (Cross Rd). Nicholson

This one is outside my remit but a great photo. At the Parting of the Heaths. I think the little two storey cottage might be this one with a slightly longer slope on the back roof than the front. I'll admit it's fairly weak evidence.

Helen - The location of this cottage is just right if the last remaining top shops are just up the road in the the building with 'Foleshill Electronics Services' as the left hand shop and the former Heath Hotel next door. |

I think you're spot on about that two storey cottage, Helen. The shape of the roof matches, and you can even see where the chimney used to be, where the newer tiles slightly show up. |

As I've said many times, I do enjoy the identity kit skills as you put together the past & the present.
