Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think Wheatley St/Priory High School for Girls was moved to Blackberry Lane, Wyken and became Lyng Hall Comprehensive School in around 1955, The headmistress was a Miss Imms and the deputy was Mrs Turner.
The old photo of Wheatley St is a cracker by the way |

Thanks for that Charabanc.
I've always wondered who Selina Dix House was named after and now I know!
Dutchman - I have been trying, for some time, to establish some replacement memorial in the city for Selina Dix, since the block of flats named after her was demolished in 2005.
Several years ago, the new City College appealed for suggestions for people after whom they could name their new buildings near the Swanswell.
I wrote suggesting Selina Dix because of her enormous contribution to the people of Hillfields and Coventry, particularly in respect of the building where courses on health and child care were held. I heard nothing in reply and, as far as I know, the buildings remain unnamed.
I continue to campaign at every opportunity. |

Ford street.
I'm sorry but if you look at a 1905 map I can't see how a photographer could have captured Wheatley St school, the flour mills and Priory St baths from any point in Ford St.
Maybe I'm missing something ???????????????? |

It's definitely Ford Street and I'm fairly sure the chimney on the right belonged to the chemical works in Perkins Street.

Definitely the chemical works in Perkins St, they had a rear entrance in Cox St where we used to nip in and purloin a tea chest for our trolleys. |

Selina Dix - when I was a pupil at Wheatley Street School way back in 1942 to 1946 we were divided into 'Houses' and Selina Dix was Yellow, Godiva Blue, Ellen Terry Green and Red was George Elliot. Obviously these were all famous women connected with Coventry and we were encouraged to believe that we too could become women who could, and would, contribute to the future of Coventry |

Thank you for that Watson.
Selina died in the year that you went to the school.
Her death was actually registered in Bakewell, Derbyshire, but I don't know whether she was buried there. She was born in Beeston, Nottingham but lived,
for most of her life, in Coventry. Whilst headmistress of the Girls' School, she actually lived at 4 Fairfax Street, next to the school. |
