You have no idea, Mick! I sometimes think that the reason that there are so many images of Coventry buildings is because somebody was dismayed they were about to be demolished and decided to record them before they were levelled. |

Some 'new' pub images have emerged:
Not many photos of Waters with The Bear.
Also we've had a few of The Gate Tavern/Gate Hangs Well on Howard Street. Fred/Rob's Pubs section says this closed in Oct '78 - these are mid-70s, so in its final drinking days.
This one also shows the view along Howard Street over Jenner Street.

Similar shots have been seen before, including the one on Fred/Rob's pub site, however this one from Dean Nelson on FB includes a good view of the buildings at the sides of the White Friar pub.

Hi all,
THE CHIP REPORT
===============
Good afternoon.
Whilst evaluating patient route access aboard the spaghetti bus No51, (details on the bus topic), I stopped off at the Boat pub on Shilton Lane.
This has to be the most English of pub grub anywhere. I'm eating later today, so I didn't want an overload. I enjoyed a bowl of homemade chips, washed down with a jar of St Austell ales. This has to be game set & match!
It won't be long before I'm tucking in to one of their selection of daily roasts. That's a promise!!!

There's a very clever, but accidental tromp-loeil in this photo. My eyes were drawn to the left end of the brick wall, that seems to be designed as the prow of a boat. Until I noticed the van parked nose into it! True Blue Coventry Kid

Hi all,
The problem with small cosy pubs, is they only need a staff let down to render big disappointments for pre-booked parties. So turning up at a nice pub on my own has little consequence for me, if I had to wander on to the next pub. Which in this case would be the Old Crown in Lentons Lane.
That's always the risk when I'm recommending somewhere. |

I no longer recommend any eating establishment to others as the turnover of cooks/chefs is too frequent and you cannot assume that all is as it was even 6 months prior. |

Hi all,
A duty today has seen me fall into the Boat in Shilton Lane. In fact I was queuing up at ten to twelve this morning.
I enjoyed the best roast beef dinner I could ever have dreamt of today.
Regards rapid staff change over in pubs & restaurants, I agree with you Argon, but at the Boat, it's the licensee & her daughter who provide the food & preparations.
If I had ready access in an evening, I wouldn't be going anywhere else for English style food. Sadly, no buses in the evening.
I might have a duty later in the week. I'm so looking forward to it.
PS. Most places get things wrong sometimes, just like I do, but I can tell you, that I've now enjoyed two full lunchtime dinners, one chips on their own dinner, & one drink dinner. I've yet to be disappointed.
No, I'm not on commission, but if anyone wants a daytime escort in that area (I'm not DBS checked) it will be no trouble!
Maybe I can qualify as HCF checked |

Thanks to Dean Nelson on FB - don't think I'd actually seen this one of the City Arms before. I never realised how close to Earlsdon Street the old Pub was.
According to Fred/Robs Pubs section Mr Chambers was the final landlord of the old building from 1929 with the new Pub coming in 1931 so this might be one of the final images of it -

Yes, enjoyable. Very substantial.
I may be going there in the near future.
Thank you for asking. |

Just noted an interested comment on FB this morning from a gentleman called Tom Daly - I put the old tiles from the Dun Cow pub roof in Jordan Well onto the roof of the Registry Office in about 1968 - they wanted old tiles. |

Hi all,
The small ham salad at the Boat this lunchtime. The homemade chips were extra.
All washed down with a pint of Tribute. |

Hi all,
Whatever I share regarding eating or drinking out, is totally from my own experiences.
I'm not on commission from the Boat, the HollyBush or the Wallace.
When Pam was alive here, whenever I had a good experience, the first thing I wanted to do was share it with her. That's my intent with you on here. I only want to share the best & what I know to be true. We are not an advertising site, we are a Coventry sharing site, or elsewhere if it's part of a comparison with Coventry.
The sort of food dished up at the Wallace & the Boat, was commonplace twenty years ago.
Sadly, not so much now.
Have a good day all. I'm off to a church Saturday coffee morning at Holbrooks chapel in Parkgate Rd. The intent there is to provide warmth & friendship. Nothing else unless asked for. If it was, I would tell you. I only tell it as it is.
Love to you all. |
