I agree Helen. My mother used to tell me that when she first came to Coventry, in the mid-fifties, she found work at a printers/bookbinders "opposite the Cathedral". Stupidly, I never did quiz her further. Now, later in years, I wish I had because the only business that I have found which might match her description is the one at 48 New Street, although I'll never know for sure!

Thanks, Heathite. I still believe Charles Hill, in New Street, seems the most likely candidate given her description of being "opposite the Cathedral" even if the premises do not appear that substantial? I've done a little research on the business, given her reference to bookbinding, but details do seem rather scarce - might need another afternoon down The Herbert!!

Oddsock, there was a bigger building at the back that encroached onto the land behind the 3 storey building next door. Britain From Above view of the rear of New Street south Log in to zoom. Building is half way up the picture on the right quarter.

Thanks Helen, that may very well explain it - it certainly looks plausible. It's just a damn shame I didn't quiz her more when I had the chance, but I believe that's a common regret! Thanks everyone for your help - it's greatly appreciated. Thumbs up

Hi Helen. Glad you liked that one, it flagged to me as a new one. Where are the topshop windows in the shot on post #25 though, from the shot in my post #27??

Hi Neil. The top shops start just next to the printers. The tops are cut off at the top of the photo and the bottom storeys are hidden behind the timber house nearer to the camera.

This is the only view of this end of New Street that I've seen. When you think that you've seen it all, something new pops up... well, something old. Big grin
