Rob, Anne,
We knew all about the statue, but there was a guy (call him Smith) who was out to embarrass the council. He had been a bad boy from birth, had been to several remand homes, prison and such - he hated the officials and police. The came on the race coach looking for him, they were going to hold him till after the ceremony was over but he disappeared. Just the same they told the council to change the cover. I knew of him and his tricks from the race crowd. |

NeilsYard.
The picture of the ice cream car, you asked if it was Prudential. Yes it was from about 1936, but this shows Hilton's shoe shop from a different angle, the same site before Trinity Street was built.

A poignant film here given the date but worthy of note is the snippet at 01:44 which includes the Prudential building referenced in this thread going up |

Your photo 649, where is the bank? Is it the angle or is the photo before 1928? |

I don't know the date for sure. Somewhere between 1920 and 1932. Either way, Lloyds would be just left of the photo. Martins Bank is on the left edge with a short curve of Pepper Lane on the bottom left leading to it. Derby Lane runs left to right with the library bottom right. Butcher Row would have been just off to the right, although it was probably being demolished at this point? There is a photo looking more to the right, looking over the demolition of Butcher Row and Cross Cheaping. I've not seen it online (I think) but it's in a number of books. |

As the photo shows in post 650, Hertford Street was rather wide, so the Nat West bank would've been slightly off the left of the photo, as Helen says, although the angle is deceptive, admittedly.
I can't remember where I read it, but I think the distinctive Burton's shop was built around the same time as the bank, so that possibly places the aerial view as being around the early 1930s. On the Now and Then page where I used that photo, I've stated 1930, but out of the hundreds of books and papers that I've read, I really can't recall where that date was mentioned! |

I'm guessing the Prof's photo was taken from the building at the junction of Cross Cheaping and Butcher Row. |
