Red Lane School

I'm looking for any info on Red Lane School, as a kid I lived in Stockton Rd, I can just remember going there, but not why, I was not that healthy as a kid I had ingrowing mumps, but can remember being in a bed either in a car park or playground area, later going to St Marks, I was born in 1953. Also any info on Stockton Rd would be great, I can remember the London Laundry, it seemed so big back then.

I was at Red Lane School a bit before you and I can remember if the weather was right we all had a kip in the playground, maybe this is what you remember. I can remember just one teacher, his name was Mr Amos. Anyway welcome to our Forum

Thanks for the kind welcome and info, I might now live in Canada but I'm still a Coventry Kid. I will have to wait for my son to arrive to see if he is able to enlarge that news story a little, the old eyes are going a bit. But yes being outside in a row of beds is my memory, then going to St Mark's School, which if I remember had a iron fence at the front in the middle splitting the playground in two, outside toilets, and being in a class making a comb cover, sewing the edges, strange memory. My dad (Frank) worked at Wickmans on Banner Lane, cycled to work everyday, I think it must have been a hell of a ride, as we moved to Tile Hill I think just to be close to his works. Stockton Road, everytime I have been back to the UK in the last 22 years I have made a visit there, taken my son to see where it all started, in fact my best friend now is Pat Whitland who lived next door to me, we have remained friends to this very day. Pat. I'm still looking to find a photo of that school in Red Lane, just to see if it brings some long lost memory back.

Hey you lot thanks for this I'm just sitting here in Canada and feeling a little tear in my eye, my past is catching up with me for sure, it's hard to think that a memory has come to this, and just in a few days. It must be at least 55 years since I was there, and all I could remember was Red Lane and sleeping in a bed outside, my, my. I cannot remember the building but who knows what dreams I can bring back to life. I lived at number 19 Stockton Rd, so mum must have walked me up the road, past the London Laundry, along Redcar Rd, then there was an alley way leading to Stoney Stanton Rd, over the canal, then Red Lane. If i remember there was a wall in Red Lane we used to sit on, topped with blue brick. And Bretts Stamping and around the corner, the sweet shop called the Bonbon or something like that, plus playing in the Swanswell Park. I'm going to be reading all the letters on the forum and see if any other memories come to light. I'm enjoying this. Thank you all. Robb

Great photos, it's like going back in time.

I started school at Red Lane and went there for just one year from 1962-63 before we moved from Coventry. At that time I lived with my mum and dad in Ordnance Road. I don't remember the name of any teachers, but remember that my teacher used to punish children by hitting them on the backs of their legs with a black PE pump! I have a photo of me in the playground. I can still remember that horrible school smell and the squeak of shoes in the corridors. I won't say they were happy memories.

My memories of Red Lane School were bad as well. One day I was sent to the Headmaster for reasons I cannot remember, I got a slap across the face full force, when I left his office in tears I ran straight out the gate and home. My mum went berserk! When she saw the red handmark on my face, she marched me back to the school and had a good old barney with the headmaster. Anyway she would not let me go to school for months, and the education people came round the house and allsorts. They were not happy days for me, or maybe if I behaved myself things would have been different.

Hello PhilipinCoventry and NormK, this is a wonderful website, full of great memories. In 1963 we moved to Water Orton, a village in North Warwickshire. My father worked for the Admiralty, hence living in Ordnance Road, he moved about a lot for his career. So, I continued my education there, my early memories of school weren't good, but improved as I got older, in fact I am still in education, having just got a second degree at the age of 55! I moved back to Coventry in the 70's and lived in Chandos Street for 3 years before moving to away again. At the moment I am in Derbyshire, but still return to Coventry regularly as my mother-in-law still lives in Whitley and I have other family in Cheylesmore. I have so many happy, vivid memories of my early years in Coventry. My grandmother's house in Oliver Street and some of the characters that lived there.

St Marks, Templars School, Limbrick Wood, Woodlands, with a stint at the Butts College during a plumbing apprentice. At the time I did not like school, but as I now look back, it was worth it, Woodlands taught me a lot, if I was to change anything I think I should have stayed on an extra year. I can, read, write, know my tables, and learned respect for others. Over the years my education has helped me stay working, I left school in 69/70 and have managed to work all my life, still do.

I`m glad I looked through some of your previous postings NormK. You went to Red Lane School. Right by my desk where I am sitting typing this, I have open a well-used Coventry History Book written by The Rev Canon J Howard R Masterman MA, possibly written about 1911 - he was a member of the Education Committee and the book was probably written to be circulated among schools. What`s this got to do with "Red Lane School" - well this book has the Red Lane School stamped in it front and back and has the name F. Collier written inside the cover. I have a feeling he may have been a teacher there or even the Head Master, I know he was a friend of my father George Turner who taught, firstly Holbrooks Juniors, then Hen Lane (Whitmore) and he finished off at Caludon Castle. He was also evacuated with some of the pupils from one of these schools for a while to Polesworth during WW2
