Not sure if you've seen this, Helen, but I hadn't. Shared thanks to John Miles on the Visit Historic Coventry FB page. Apparently it's in the roof space at Bonds Hospital.

Nice one Thumbs up Images of the inside Bablake are a bit lacking. I've got a fair bit of the front range but the right hand range is very sparse for pictures.

That photograph appears on page 203 in the book For So Long As the World Shall Endure (The 500 Year History of Bond's and Ford's Almshouses), 2019, and this explanation (largely guesswork) is offered....

It's described as being in the roof space but was there originally a ceiling below to hide it or was it open to the rafters? The Great Fire of London might have been a moment of quiet schadenfreude for Coventry because it had long since banned thatched roofs because the hazard they presented.

Helen, have you noticed it is another J before a number as on the Little Palace Yard arbour and also fleur de lys.

Yes Anne, I was thinking about that. So the J is a 1?

Yes, it looks like it. Which means that the one on the arbour is likely a date as well. Searching for the rose with a crown on top on google comes up with a Lord Lieutenant's badge. I wonder if that could be anything with the one in the roof space.

While there are interior images in various forms out there, I've never been able to piece together all the rooms for the ancient school or Bond's hospital, with the latter particularly lacking in information. I don't even have a floor plan for the hospital. Has there ever been any attempt to document the buildings?

Question

Helen, there are some interesting illustrations on here of the outside. It is well worth looking in Google books for old books on miscellaneous subjects.

Thanks Anne Double thumbs up I'd already seen and subsequently bought the Pugin book but only seen part of the second. I've matched images to most of the plan of the ground floor of the school and guestimated the layout of the upstairs and placed a few of the images. But that's the first that I've seen of the Bond's hospital part. I shall rummage through Google books.
