I hadn't spotted before that the end property on Derby Lane had at some point seemably been rendered over:

Well spotted but the other way round. The windows and the woodwork were a later addition. It threw me at first, particularly as the front of the property was so ornamental. Just round the corner in both photos there was a door, but even further into the past, I believe it was a window. They hadn't got the idea/technology of a window in a door at that time. The original doors were further up Derby Lane or the Spicerstoke at different times, as the buildings split up and reconfigured. |

One of the reasons for so many reversed pictures is that cameras in days gone by, like a telescope, unless it has a correction lense, produced a reversed image. Photographers would correct the image with the enlarger at the point of printing. |

I think what Helen was actually referring to by saying " the other way round" was the order in which the photos were taken. In modern times we naturally tend to assume that when we see a building rendered over, it's something done more recently over the top of an ancient structure. However, in this case it's "the other way round" - the rendering being on the building in the older photograph, which had since been removed and refaced to look like an older building - but in the newer photograph! As Spike Milligan would've said: " It's all very confusing, really."! |

Thanks Rob. Yes, this time it was about date order. Much of my time has been spent trying to decide what images are oldest and I still get it wrong - see organ. But there are back to front photos too. Quite a few of the Mirrorpix are back to front. |

Just been re-examining this thread following some responses on FB - looking at this one -
Then at this image from Coventry Digital -
That one says it's Derby Lane viewed from the rear of the Library, however, looking at the earlier later image post-blitz the same view would have seen that tall 3-storey building we have discussed before - so if I have the correct view does that mean the 3 Storey only dated from the early 20th century (guessing that's when the Cov Digi image is from)? |

The timber building butted up to the new brick building (off to the right). The new building replaced a similar brick clad timber building. I somehow got the impression that the big timber building was demolished just before the war but now I can't find the image that made me think that, so perhaps it was bombed after all. The CD photo must be taken from the south of the library ie next to it, not directly behind (unless you consider the Trinity Churchyard the front) |

Thanks Helen - its just in the upper image the tall building appears immediately behind the Library which made me wonder. So is the CD image where the X is? Looks like it might have once been a nice yard with that wall -
