I owned a shop called CVS (Coventry Vacuum Services) in the 70's-80's. Anyone remember it. We had a gentlemen's tailors on one side and Barclays Bank on the other. Barclays later moved across the road to what was the Bear Inn and Yorkshire Bank took it over. The shop was one of 2 temporary buildings put up after the war. Now all gone and replaced by Cathedral Malls or something like that. Haven't managed to find any pics of it anywhere. |

Hello & welcome Macke, to our Coventry History forum
Temporary shops have featured often on here. My mum had one in White St, until 1964. |

I believe one of those shops was for radio enthusiasts, I bought some parts from there. I also bought a Sinclair book on construction of various projects including a metal detector that I couldn't get to work. Was there also a photography shop there? Les |

Hi Macke, you will find a photo of your shop, that I took in the mid 1980's, in the Martins Bank thread here |

Thank you. That's brilliant. Was beginning to think no photos of the shop existed. |

I do remember those shops there as well as the Bank. What the story behind owning/working in the temporary buildings then macke?
You might be interested in this thread all about the Bank and High Street as theres some more images of the spot your shop was on before the temporary units went up! |

What's the old saying "as safe as houses" well the bank was. The first thing I noticed when I looked at the above photo were the 'cleared' streets. It would take only one guess to know where it was taken from so too many other memorable photos, thank goodness it was left standing (steeple)

My great grandfather, J F Eales, was appointed Recorder of Coventry in 1928. He had also been a partner in a solicitors firm, Band Hatton I believe, in 1905.
From the 1911 census, I know he was living in Styvechale Avenue at that time.
I'm loving looking through this site, trying to get a feel of what his life in Coventry would have been like. If anyone can point me in the direction of any relevant information or photographs of building where he would have worked etc I'd be very grateful.
I do have a family scrapbook with newspaper cuttings of some of his cases etc. Sadly he died at the age of 55 in 1936, when taking a break from the pressures of work. |
