On 11th Aug 2011 10:26pm, karenerbs said: I've been racking my brains trying to think of the name of the pub on the corner of Burges and Corporation St it's called the Tudor Rose now - but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called in the late 70's early 80's when I used to frequent it!
Yates's Wine Lodge was its name, and it had a policy in its upstairs "concert" room or whatever, of modern jazz on Sunday evening in the 1960s. I know nothing of the place in general, but that Sunday night jazz club, a club that boasted the best from London clubs, and the best from the USA, all working with a local piano/bass/drums, of course, was super. It seems to me that it became a "folk" club at some point, and "people" (notoriously-famous for being resentful at the notion of its being "folk") just stopped going. In time, that club also died, though its death couldn't have come fast enough for the "people". Sorry, if this point was addressed long ago.

Hi Longford Lad, Circa 1960 the pub was known as 'Trumans' or it may have been spelled 'Truemans'. Oh my Cheers Cheers

Sorry Tricia that's wrong. Trumans was the brewery which owned the pub. Trumans was a London brewery that started in the 1660s but they expanded into the Midlands in the 1870s by acquiring the Philips brewery in Burton-on-Trent.

Hi pixrobin, bear in mind that even though the brewery who owned the pub may have been "Trumans" it doesn't mean that the pub wasn't also known by some as simply "Trumans" Thumbs up

Point taken. I know the large sign on it said Trumans but for the life of me can't think of it's proper name. Also can't remember the name of a similar pub in Hales Street (on the right as you approach Trinity St - though there were a couple of shops in between)

From memory the pub at the bottom of the Burgess was just called the Wine Lodge. In its time it was one of the roughest pubs in the city centre, I saw a glass thrown at the bar staff in mid 1960s. Jazz club upstairs on a Sunday was good. Yates was in the old Anslows furniture shop by the Council House.. Our bungalow at Ash Green was built for the Anslows manager in the 1930s.

You are right Heritage. I have asked our friends the name of the pub. Whilst they all agree the name was Waters Wine Lodge, they say it was known as 'Trumans'. This being the name of the brewery. PS Friends have now decided it was Yates Wine Lodge and that Waters was in High Street, they are open to being proved wrong.

Its easy to see why it was known as Trumans ! but you can't see on this picture what the pub sign says. According to "The character of Coventry" it traded as the "Wine Lodge" until 10th June 1968 when it was renamed the "Tally Ho" . The name was changed again in the 1990's to the "Tudor Rose"
