The building didn't have a great age to it, so even if it didn't suffer from an incident, maybe the owners wanted to use the space differently. An outside possibility is that it might have been damaging the Golden Cross?

I have been told that any alterations were post 1970, prior to then that was the entrance to the pub. Through the door at the end was a Gents Only room. Stairs off the corridor to the big bar room which was the regular haunt for the young Coventrians particularly Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

This is a tough question that I'm not hopeful of an answer. I have a set of interiors of a timber building called The Cross. They don't seem to match the Coventry Cross or the Golden Cross. There's a hint that it might be off West Orchard and that it might have been near the Cross Cheaping corner (eg number 14). It would be pre 1850. Any pub or inn turned up where it shouldn't be?

This is about all that came up of interest, well I searched for the Cross, but the name The Glauber's Head may be of interest, not come across that one before. Apparently Glauber was an alchemist.

Just to give a few possible ideas, here's a list of other nearby pubs that had "Cross" in the name at some time or other.... Cross Cheaping Vaults, 37 Cross Cheaping Cross Guns, Cross Cheaping Cross Guns, Spon Street Cross Keys, 16 Earl Street Cross Keys, New Buildings Cross Keys, Smithford Street Smile

Thanks for those suggestions Anne and Rob. Double thumbs up The Cross Keys on Earl Street is worth investigating. The interiors folder includes quite a few from that area. One of the rooms has 2 Georgian windows and I think the building was probably 3 storey' like the Cross Keys. Food for thought.

Yes Anne, that ties in with when they demolished those buildings as they collected plots to build the Council House. They had gone but others still remained in 1897 when they made the Fire Insurance maps. Thanks Neil, yes I was looking at just that photo. Double thumbs up I'm trying to find some references to the decorations inside. Wherever I'm looking for had a 'state chamber' complete with bosses on the ceiling with royal insignia. The Cross Keys was directly opposite the Palace Yard. I'm searching the newspapers for something about the fancy interior but so far all I've found is that it suffered a fire in about 1846. The camera man would have been a bit to the left of this passageway, looking northwest.

Some excellent Pub news for once............ Delighted to announce that The Stag on Bishop Street/Lamb Street, is re-opening this Saturday, 24th August. It's been brought back to life by its new Landlord Paul Curtis. Some of you may know Paul from his fun Coventry Tours as the "Deep Fact Friar!" I'd encourage everyone to try to support this venture and have a Pint or two!..... Cheers Cheers

And hey, what better venue potentially for an HCF brekkie - we might get to meet (and recruit) other like-minded Coventry enthusiasts. We just need to convince Paul Curtis that a full English is the way to go! Big grin Cheers

The Peacock still existed when I first started this project and I could see it on Google. I used it to to try and orientate buildings in photos, though I later discovered that it wasn't in exactly the same location as the earlier building. The next time I came to look, it had gone! Street view had it for a while if you took the right road and Bing had it for even longer. It became a race against time to pinpoint a few legacy buildings before they vanished. Thank goodness there's still one final peek of the pub available on Google Street View from 2008 ! I hadn't realised the pub had moved, though - I'll have to update the pub website if you can help me with that, Helen. Smile Post copied from topic Gosford Street on 21st Aug 2024 3:30 pm
