The laundrette was further up towards the round kiosk on the left hand side next to the chip shop.

Mills and Mills - I'd forgotten that name. Yes, I can picture the big sign at high level on the brick side wall - an ad for Imperial Typewriters?

Yes, Pearks were a national chain, I believe. They had a small grocers shop two doors away from my parents' shop in Cannon Hill.

I remember the Pearks store which my mother used when I was a child, along with the counter service Sainsbury's in Trinity Street, the Home & Colonial and Allwoods, Atkins & Turton. A long way from the likes of Tesco and Aldi. Interesting that Pearks and Home & Colonial were affiliated to Lipton's, the tea company. You rarely see their tea now, but until recently Lipton's Yellow Label was the standard tea available on P&O Cruise ships. However, there were so many complaints about its dire quality that they have replaced it with Twinings. Some American-based ships still use Yellow Label, but Americans don't 'get' tea at all.

Hi all Wave I grew up with a local Pearks store in the block of shops, opposite the Devon pub. I remember the lemonade powder, that was for me a cheaper version of Kali. Pearks was in competition with a VG store nearby, but both always had folks in them.

Hi & thank you Zigzag, Wave My memory is so hazy on both of my mums shoe shop locations, all of which were in the suburbs. It was her town centre shop that was my day today port of call. I think that I can remember the chip shop, now that you mention it, near to a green-grocers, was it?

Question

Yes the green-grocers, chip shop and laundrette were all close together. I do remember the shoe shop in the precinct.

I remember a shop that sold teas. Scooped from wooden boxes. It was in the Precinct, near to Cosmos I think. So much a new memory compared to days of old, but now more than 35 years ago for myself!

I`m glad you set me straight, I thought of Pearks in Trinity St as "The" Maypole. When I first came back to Coventry in 1947, I lived above George Masons in Jubilee Crescent. There was also a fish and chip shop at the Pilot end of the crescent of shops, seem to remember a red headed assistant called Judith

I know this is an old post but it has just come to my attention whilst researching my family tree. I have just found a document belonging to my grandfather that was a rental agreement between him and Mr Adams for his shop at 27 Warwick Row. My Grandfather was Robert White and he owned and Ran the newsagents with my Grandmother Eva up to renting it out in 1950. Prior to that the shop was located where Lovetts estate agents is now and ran by my Great Grandfather
