Stivichall / Styvechale

I would question the location of the icehouse given in google maps. In the early 90s I lived at 58 Knoll drive, marked on the map. There was a grassed area at the rear of the garden and signs of where the icehouse had been were still evident and can be seen by a faded area in the grass.

matchle55, I think that the marks in the grass behind 58 Knoll Drive were probably from the hall itself. I agree with Neil that the 1954 map has the icehouse at the back of what became 11 Knoll Croft. I even think that there is an area in the back garden that seems to be struggling to grow greenery. I think that the houses you can see in the pictures and the fence are the backs of Ridgeway Avenue. Ah... confirmed here.

Helen, Whilst not doubting your superior knowledge I cannot find number 11 Knoll Croft on the map unless I'm looking in the wrong place ??

Helen, The more I think about it the less I'm convinced, knowing what I was told 30 years ago, but let's agree to disagree. I might call round next week.

m55. Strangely enough, I used to visit a friend, early 1960's (I succeeded him as head choirboy!) at 1 Modbury Close about half a mile SE of Knoll Croft, the numbering starts at "2" now. Google doesn't get it right always. When searching for my present address Google took me to one the other side of the estate and my house was missing from the map. I live at the end of a private drive that Google did not enter on early versions of Streetview. I told them about it and recently they came up the drive and I am no longer incognito.

Was this an earlier incarnation of the Grange/Hall then?

Stivichall Grange still exists here. It's not uncommon for there to be granges, manors, halls etc with the same name. Sometimes connected to the same family as they built new properties for themselves or their kids, but not always.
