The drivers must have been very patient. The 18 had to cross the busy A45 by the Phantom, and the 18A by the Burnsall Road subway.

The Number 22, which originally went from The Wheel pub on Sewall Highway to Willenhall, started about 1956/57 time, I think. Any better ideas? After a short while it got extended to Old Church Road. Was that the last new bus number?
A few months back I posted some history of the service 22, 'Coventry buses-past and present' topic post #913. Service 4. There was a pre-war 4 which ran from Sewall Highway-City Centre-Coundon. The 4 to Wyken started on the 9th August 1953, running from Pool Meadow to the junction of Hipswell Highway & Belgrave Road. 13th May 1962 it was extended to Clifford Bridge Road and at the same time the central terminus was moved out of Pool Meadow. Those who used this service were not happy with that and made a bit of fuss, so, from the 23rd December 1962, it was moved back into Pool Meadow. 25th January 1970 it was extened again to serve Walsgrave Hospital and in doing so, that ended the 6 running to the Hospital.

Hi & thank you for that. The No23, may have been later, going to Allesley Park? I certainly remember the service 22 starting from Purcell Rd. I lived in Sewall Highway & often used the service from BlackBerry Lane.

Thank you all for the information. During August 1953 I would have been in hospital recovering from polio, (fortunately mild but I did not recover full strength until adolescence). I have been writing up my experiences and the commencement of the no. 4 adds a mystery as to why I was allowed to move from Richard Lee school to Stoke Council, Briton Road in autumn 1953 on the grounds that there was no bus route from Hocking Road along Hipswell Highway. I suppose it was because the climb up The Drive would have been too steep for me! I don't recall the moving of the city terminus in 1962 but I preferred the no 6 because it was the more frequent service.

The service 23 started on 3rd May 1959, running as you say to Allesley Park. Service 24, with the withdrawal of services 14 & 14A, the 24 was introduced in part substitution of some of the route starting 19th June 1966. That service itself was later withdrawn on 14th July 1967. The 17A running to Baginton Airport was renumbered to 24 on the 4th August 1968. Service 25, the 'City-Railbus' to Coventry Station started on 28th November 1966. Service 26, a limited stop service to Henley Green was introduced 13th March 1967. Service 27, that came about with the splitting of service 13, the 27 running to Toll Bar End from 24th September 1967. Service 28, a new service to serve Cannon Park introduced on the 17th November 1968. I've no information on Coventry Transport running a service 29. Service 30, another limited stop service, running this time to Bedworth started on 30th March 1969.

The 23 definitely ran from the terminus in Winsford Avenue, Allesley Park in the 70s/80s.

I know, it certainly did, I used the No.23 every morning for work. If it was a nice day I walked from the city up Winsford Ave.

The main bus I used was the 16, 16a. One ran from Keresley to Town and the ither continued to Green Lane. Very handy when I was going to my grandparents in Wainbody Avenue.
