Just to update this one, Rob - I think this one may show the last bits of Poddy Croft Terrace to the left, with the rears of the houses on Rudge Road to the right, still with the washing out! Big grin

My great great grandfather John Yardley was living at 5 Poddy Croft in 1861, Neil. Would that be the same as the Terrace ?

On 4th Mar 2022 10:23am, Rob Orland said: I can see why it's difficult to orientate ourselves, Neil! But I've just had a quick look on Britain from Above and a 1906 map, and it seems that even though Prof's photo was labelled "Rudge Road Top Shops", those top shops were, misleadingly, actually not directly in that street, but halfway between (and parallel with) the north end of Rudge Road and Albion Street. I reckon they're the place labelled "Poddy Croft Terrace" in post 5 above. Thumbs up
Sorry Rob just revisiting this one again. I'm still a bit confused by the image Prof posted. It can't be at the North end of Rudge Road as the properties there were not 3-storey? Is it actually the back of No.1 Albion Street?

I think that it is taken in Albion Street, the odd curving section that paralleled Hertford Place. Junction Street would have been just to the right. The camera was looking east. I get the feeling that the buildings might only have had three levels at the back? Rudge Road is the houses you can see in the distance (starting number 30, 31 going left) and the backs on the left (ending with 29).

Thats what we thought originally Helen but again looking at this one it seems like its taken at the junction / southern end of Rudge Road with the road sign visible - so as if the photographer is standing North of 13 Hertford Square but it doesn't seem to match the shape of the building on the end of Prof's photo?

I think the BFA Image Rob found might have it -

That's the spot. Thumbs up What is confusing is the design of the houses.

Thanks again Helen - you can see from that BFA image from the end property on the east side of Rudge Road that the rears were 3 storey as opposed to the fronts. Thumbs up
