Just heard today that the Barclays Bank on Daventry Road is sadly closing on the 30th June 2017. It opened in 1966 as Martins Bank and then became a Barclays branch in 1969. To see old photos of the bank (when it was Martins Bank) see here.

Was walking around Quinton Pool today and noticed this box attached to a tree, wasn't sure what it was but after looking online I think it's a bat box.

On 1st Aug 2015 12:35pm, Dougie inactive said: Anyone remember did these shops at the Cheylesmore, did they get bombed out during the war, as the wife was telling me they were only built about 1954 - they called the space between the shops the bumps before the new shops were built Big grin it was their play area in the 40/50s
It was waste land until 1954, and I remember attending several bonfire nights on the site, one in particular when my father let me use the starting pistol he had for work, to fire blanks as I hadn't got any bangers. I used to creep up behind people then fire a shot to make them jump!

The centre portion of the shops was not a bomb site. The parade was built from both ends but building ceased on the outbreak of war. The work was not completed until the mid-1950's. The Cheylesmore pub, completed just before the war broke out, was damaged by incendiary bombs as were a number of houses in the area, and there were a number of casualties. An air raid warden was killed on the corner of Quinton and Daventry Roads, by what is now the dentist's. These bombs were almost certainly intended for the city centre and not deliberately targeted on Cheylesmore.

For about a two years in the mid 70's, I worked in Paynes' Daventry Road branch, and remember these shops well, it was and still is a great place to shop.

I've recently been involved in a project to improve Quinton Pool durin "Love Parks Week" "Over the three days rangers and volunteers managed to build a viewing platform, reinstate the bank on one side to be more natural but on the other side reposition the revetment and refill with stone then topped off with soil. On the island they made a landing jetty ready for future work to the island." More work will be completed at a later date and more volunteers will be needed. P.S. We've also got duck crossing signs in Quinton Park (sometimes incorrectly known as Black Prince Avenue) Cheers

A few days ago on the "Love Cheylesmore" FB page a picture of a proposed development of Quinton Park area by Gibson was posted, taken from the Coventry Standard. I hadn't realised he had proposed wholescale plans for other parts of the city as well as the city centre but thinking about it seems logical. It shows a dancehall in the Parade, a cinema near the pool on the green, a library in Quinton Park and a Health Centre where the newish one is now as well as swimming baths and a Community Centre in what is now Ebbw Vale Terrace. It does look rather interesting and could have been rather good but obviously came to nothing presumably for financial reasons. Does anyone know if he made plans for other parts of the city as well?

Are the rangers and people happy with the amount of water fowl in the park? It looks overcrowded to me for their good health over time.

In reply to OL's earlier post these houses in Sheriff Avenue, Canley, were built to Gibson's designs in 1943.

Kaga, the wildlife population did get too large for Quinton Pool a few years ago, especially the Canada Geese, however it seems to have reached a steady state now. Sadly, there is currently only one swan there (its mate was run over last year). The second pool has been cleared of excess growth and is now home to many smaller water birds. The larger pool is also used by local anglers. The Canada Geese are still a bone of contention for some due to the mess they make on the paths - but hey, that's what animals do. There are also bats and many other birds, especially pigeons and gulls.
