The George Wilson gas meter factory was on Livingstone Road. It was on the opposite side from the swimming baths and took up much of the street. It had a frontage on Foleshill Road too. It was actually split in two by the office where I worked, the Coventry City Council Weights & Measures Department, as Wilson's had the factory on one side and their offices on the other.
I believe that the Weights & Measures offices and testing labs were once part of Wilsons too, many years before, but were bought by the council and became a state of the art weighing and measuring facility which housed an amazing array of standards and equipment. |

Slightly confused by this one as I've seen Rob's image of the top of Bishop Street and The Cranes Pub appears to be in a different location? Unless it's me? Did it move buildings?
Interesting image nonetheless - that policeman had his work cut out!

I'm posting this as an addition to the Woodway Lane and Potters Green topic, it is more appropriate here.
For anyone interested in reading about Foleshill and what the 1840 directory has to offer.

CKV 1D, hi.
I know nothing of cars, but those vehicles nose to tail in your photo kinda look out of place to me. Could they be the 40's, and the headscarves I thought had gone by '55 and the road looks a bit ragged like the forties too - just looks out of place somehow. Why, I lived just inside Broad Street at that time.

Kaga, I think that the vehicles shown would be right for 1947 or 1955.
Perhaps the lorry at the front of the queue was a bit slow pulling away from the traffic lights at the General Wolfe and so the others have stacked up behind him. It looks to be well loaded, could it be coke from Foleshill Gasworks? |
