Barbinoz - that house where your dad took you still stands, it's Keresley Grange on Brownshill Green Road, off Waste Lane, next door to Keresley Grange School so it's not the same house as above. The orphanage is still there :o) |

Hi Morgana,
Welcome back to the fold. I thought I knew Keresley quite well as my hubby was raised in the area but apparently I am learning something new all the time, and his memory is not so grand any more, so any new info about Keresley I will find most interesting.
Bye for now

I lived in Keresley too, love the history of Sadler and Broom of course fighting over a lady, the haunting in the barn on the farm on Penny Park Lane, funny my sisters use to keep their horses on there. Further down on Sandpits Lane just past the garage an old L-shaped house still stands, which old Mrs Sanders owned, wonder if your hubby recalls her, little lady, there was a farm there too back of the shops, I used to go horse riding lessons there with my sister. X to you all |

I know this topic is old, but it did catch my eye whilst reading some old threads. I found a site called Keresley Parish Council that thinks this site was a Saxon building of some kind. The link you gave leads us to think it was of a 14th century Castle. Allesley Castle that we have already covered on this site may have been earlier than this in construction. Dating from the civil war between King Stephen and the Empress Matilda in the 1140s. Allesley was more than likely of Motte and Bailey construction, although brickwork was found in the way of a well, and it is possible that this was the same. Henry VI, was King of England from 1422 to 1461.Giving these dates, if he did go to Keresley Castle, it would have been some 300+ years after Allesley Castle was built.
Quick up-date. Castles went from wood to stone in construction around 1260.
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

Maybe we should ask Time Team to have a dig around. A stone castle remains that may have had King Henry VI stay there. What a great peace of publicity for our city to have. Always looking forward to looking at the past.

Sorry but this one had me going. I have done a little research and have opened a new topic. Please see the Parliament of Devils topic. And to solve the riddle of the castle, I cannot find any info ref King Henry staying there. But will leave this open in case I find out more. Always looking forward to looking at the past.

Does anyone have any info on the large country house that used to stand at the end of Sadler Road, it was demolished in the early 30's.
I live in the area so I would like to know more about it, especially if anyone has any pictures.

Hello and welcome.
Did the house stand where now the two blocks of flats are, next to the doctors? I have checked my resources and cannot find anything, but maybe someone else can help. I did one on the old school house that stood where the flats are at the start of Tamworth Road, New Road. And this site was just great for information. Lets hope you have a result.
Just found this but does not mention this house. (There was no manor-house in Radford. The only house mentioned individually in Radford before the 19th century was The Porched House on the estate of Cockesonne's Charity. Radford House, near Radford Common, appears only in the 19th century. It was converted into the Radford House Hotel about 1929).
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

Hi New26
There is a picture of the original "New House" Keresley in David McGrory's book "The Illustrated History of Coventry Suburbs". As it is in a book I cannot scan it on here for you. This house was demolished in 1778. McGrory says it was replaced by a small comfortable house which belonged to the Hopkins and Smith family until 1816. Abraham Barbery Herbert acquired it and enlarged it and called it Moat House. This is the one that was demolished in the 1930's. The book also has a nice picture of the original "Old Shepherd and Shepherdess". It was the Shepherd and Shepherdess when I was a kid. I have always wondered what happened to the Shepherdess? |

The Shepherd and Shepherdess was my first regular boozer, at the time it was a Berni Inn. I played darts for them for a while. I attended Springfield Primary, which was next door to The Coronation Club. The school is gone now, but I still remember Mrs Morris, Mrs Woods, and Miss Platten. |

In my childhood days I lived in Keresley End and the pub was a well known landmark on our journeys into town |

I grew up near here and this building was not there in 1962. I attended Springfield Infant school which was on Keresley Road, just opposite New Road from 1959 onwards. There is a circle in the middle of the green, where we used to race our bikes, that was an AA battery during the war I was told. |

I was wondering Disorganised do you recall old Mrs Sanders in Sandpits Lane who lived in this house - this house is L shaped, I used to go there with Rose to visit her, do you know any history to this house prior to old Mrs Sanders?
